This model was created using Dryad : http://dryad.stanford.edu/index.php ; it is free but it seems they’re upgrading the software and you can’t download it right now.
Maybe you could check if you have the same issue with other Dryad models I uploaded : http://www.3dvia.com/search/models/tags/dryad
If it still crashes, let’s hope the next Dryad version will fix this…

Unable to load into Maya 2008 causes crash when imported.
The same thing happened to me. I’m also using Maya 2008 (06/02/2007).

I guess there might be something wrong with the .obj files exported with Dryad… I hope the new version will soon be available.
