Modeling Using The Skew Texture Tool

The skew texture tool is new functionality in the April 08 release of Shape.
It can be used to apply a photograph of a building, directly to simple 3D model,
correcting for the perspective viewpoint in the the photo.

I applied the textures twice in this model, to illustrate a couple difficulties in using this feature effectively.

The 2 buildings here are built the same way, but use 2 different versions of the building image file.
The first jpg is 1024 pixels in height, but has a low compression, resulting in a >400Kb file size.
The second jpg is the same pixel height, but has higher compression, resulting in a file size < 125Kb.

A limitation of this build of Shape is that images of >300Kb are resized (to save model file storage).
This cased the 400Kb 1024 image to be resized to 512 (before it went thru the skew filter)
The result is a 2 step decrease in image quality which is very noticeable.

Lesson of the day:
Keep your texture images (whether skewed or not), less than 300Kb in file size.
If the file is larger than 300Kb, consider resizing in Photoshop, or simply resaving using
higher file compression ratio.

The test photo used to create these models is courtesy of Chris Bonney on Flickr, and is titled “Every story tells a story”.

I noticed this as well when texturing my house. My first thought was the higher res texture I used the better, but this is not the case!
