No, it appeared as I saw it in SolidWorks – However, it has lost its color, red high gloss plastic, another one using Polished Gold does come across OK though.

Does your standard SolidWorks file have the Z axis pointing up (normal for most of the world) of horizontal (normal for SolidWorks)?
I’m only seeing gray – no gold. Textures applied in SolidWorks do get lost, but part colors and face colors do come through the translation OK (at least they did in 2009).
Are you using the 3DVIA Player or the 3DXML Viewer?

You’re right, I hadn’t noticed the orientation change until playing the model. The preview image appears as I see it in SW, but the actual model reorients when I play it. My SW model has Z horizontal.

Having the Z horizontal is the SolidWorks standard. Check out this blog post about how to deal with it/fix it - http://www.3dvia.com/blog/how-to-import-solidworks-models-into-3dvia/ - and let me know if you have any questions.
I’m glad that it worked! Did you have to do any reorientation of your model to have it be displayed the way you want it?

I have one. You take a string and pull it and it will spin and balance on just about anything.
