		&lt;p&gt;I tried to do this once, ONCE, in class, with a high detail height map of the united states.  I took the gigantic image, and used it as a displacement map on a poly plane, I then attempted to the displacement into geometry, I let it run for 7 hours before I gave up and shut down my machine!&lt;/p&gt;

		&lt;p&gt;Ouch!! That's why I went to grayscale first, alot less information to process. :-)&lt;/p&gt;

		&lt;p&gt;Good idea Wacov! It does look cool. Check it out in wire frame and vertex modes too - very nice.&lt;/p&gt;
