Convair, the maker of the plane, proposed the name ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_B-36#cite_note-1 ), but if was not official. Many aircraft are better known by their nicknames than their "official' designations. Using such questionable names for war machines continues to this day. Ironically, the B-36 never dropped a single bomb or fired a shot at an enemy, although it did manage to drop (and lose in the ocean) one nuclear device as well as dropping another by accident in the New Mexican desert ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_B-36#Notable_incidents_and_accidents ).
