nice model smike. there is only one thing I noticed. You are using a 20mm canon for this. As you can see in the wiki article the cannon for 105mm looks quite different. Is there a reason for that change?
I think it is quite a good mix, to put a WW2 canon on a 21st centruy boat. We'll see if it can handle the fast planes from today ;)

since this has 1.5mb by itself, how you managed to place so many on 'USS smikorsky'?
or just in 3ds they are bigger?

Very nice smike (glad your back from your work!). I'm kinda' surprised that we don't have more artillery pieces here on 3DVIA.

The Aberdeen Proving Grounds ( http://www.ordmusfound.org/ ) is a must see stop for anyone in the Maryland, US area. The variety of artillery and tanks is just stunning.

Also make sure that you stop in for a meal at the diner on the main street of Aberdeen. Great food, friendly service and a real treat. (No, I don't have any connection what-so-ever with the diner. I just really like good food and good people!)

the picture you referenced is a model of a 2cm Flak 38. that's what I alerady thought, when I saw your model. your model is a 2cm Flak not a 10.5 like it says in your Wiki link. Cannon and armor are totally different for those two types.

you are right alfredix its the 2cm version not the 10.5 cm.
how on earth can you see that i had not thought about if it was 2cm or 10.5 i just made it after the pictures..
but i searched for the info i used as fefreance on it and you where right..
how could you see that on the cannon i cant see any differences comparing the 2cm with the 10.5 cm cannon..
you must have a lot of brain storage of weapons info..

but okay the cannon i am working on now i am completly aware of the ammo size.
800 mm flak cannon "dora" (wow one granate could level a hole city..
but okay it took 25 minnuttes to reload it.

Hi Smike, I know a little about WW II equipement and weapons... The rest does Wiki for me.
referrring to your coming model of "DORA". It is NOT a Flak. It was used to attack huge areal targets as you can read in Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav
Btw: A Flak is the German shortcut for "Flieger-Abwehr-Kanone", which means basically "Anti-Air-Canon". You would not use a 800m gun for that purpose...

yes there was "big bertha was placed in france as one of the defence weapons"
and just like "Dora" and "gustav" she was running on rail tracks..
and not just 2 rails like a standard train but actually it used 4 rails to move on.

after a lot of study of these cannons i can tell you they where gigantisk huge monsters..
the "dora" used 5.000 men to operate.
it took 100 men to reload it using 25 minnuttes before it was ready to shoot again..
mainly because the huge granates was moved by hand power with only one hoist used to move the granate cart elevator..

Hey everybody,
there were two versions of "Big Berta": one was transported on rails, the other was towed by trucks (devided in 4 pieces).
When assembled, Big Berta stood on wheels, just like an other howitzer.
Here are some information about Berta: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bertha_(howitzer)

It was Dora who used 4 rails, but only when assembled in shooting position. The transport took place on "standard" trains, using 2 rails. Therefore they used 4 - 5 construction trains to transport all parts of Dora and any kind of support equipment and reailway parts. In shooting position, everything was assembled

Real Railway Guns, made by the "Wehrmacht" are mentioned in that Wiki Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_gun

A really nice example is that one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Ger%C3%A4t
It is called Karl Gerät". Basically a Tank with a 60cm Howitzer. It was transported on heavy load trailers on the road. or with special railway wagons.

Great discussion and new sources to be reviewed! One of my sons and I went to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland, for his 18th birthday and you can get a farily complete history of stationary and mobile artillery there!

Now the public part is called the United States Army Ordnance Museum - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Ordnance_Museum - and they do have the Krup K5 Railway Gun named "Leopold". It is big and impressive.

There is a US Atomic Cannon right across the street too. The place will overload your brain in a few hours!!

@Don: Great source you provided. I think that musum is a place where you can spent lots of time to get ideas and inspiration.

It is a great place to see so many pieces that aren't available anywhere else. Unfortunately, they are privately funded, so many of their treasures are sitting out in a giant (really giant) field and rusting into oblivion. They are doing all that they can to preserve them, but it is an expensive job.

I've got about a hundred pictures or more if anyone ever needs them.
