In line with our Da Vinci community and thanks to the partnerships we have with the Chateau du Clos Lucé and Scala Archives, Dassault Systèmes has decided to launch a Da Vinci-themed 3D design competition.

Leonardo Da Vinci, famous for the biggest Italian renaissance polymaths and one of the brightest minds of all times, had a real passion for complex machine concepts.

Even though most of them were genuine visionnary creations, some would not working properly in real life. By complementing the intelligence and vision of the human mind to modern software and hardware tools, we can have those strange machines come to virtual life and simulate their behavior! This contest was launched to illustrate this complementarity.

Based on any of the provided Da Vinci codex, design one of his creation in 3D!

  • Participants are invited to choose one codex among those provided in the community by Scala Archives. Most of those codex are rarely found on internet and make the participation even more challenging!
  • Participants will design in 3D the machine based on the codex they chose. Depending on the clarity of the codex and the complexity of the machine, some interpretation will sometimes be required!
  • Participants need to post their creation and tag it "DaVinci3D", along with a description of the machine. Additional information, visuals can only enrich the submission.
  • From 6PM (CET), project submissions or modifications will no longer be accepted.
  • Until April 25, 6PM (CET), community members and visitors will be invited to participate to a survey in order to vote for the creation they like the most.
  • At 6PM (CET), the contest will end. The votes will be collected and we will announce the winner and the two runner-ups.

The 1st prize will be awarded to the best design and best post: one HP ZBook 14, plus a chance to have his 3D model exhibited at the Clos Lucé.

The 2nd and 3rd prizes will be awarded to the two runner-ups, who will respectively receive an AMD FirePro W7000 graphic card and an AMD FirePro W5000 graphic card.

JOIN THE COMMUNITY to participate and to find all the detailed submission information, including an existing list of rare codex!

And a lot of competitors!

Chateau du Clos Lucée

The Chateau du Clos Lucé, last residence of Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise, is dedicated to reveal all the knowledges of the italian genius to the largest public.

Through the partnership with Dassault systèmes and their expertise of the more advanced technologies, is given the opportunity to suceeed in the reconstitution of the major inventions of the Master.

In collaboration with the members of the online community, we will be able to give life to the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, and, like him, go on anticipating the future.

Scala Archives

As an unique source of professional digital photographs capturing the most famous paintings, sculptures, architecture, archeology, engravings, drawings, decorative arts, photography, design, fashion, movies etc, the photo agency Scala,, is a crucial intermediary between museums and the media worldwide. On the occasion of the DaVinci 3D Experiences contest, Scala has made freely available to Dassault Systèmes its Leonardo Da Vinci’s images of drawings of machines so as to support their interactive 3D reconstruction and thus reveal Leonardo’s inventiveness to an ever expanding public.

AMD FirePro™ workstation graphics for uncompromised design and simulation

AMD FirePro drivers are thoroughly tested, optimized and certified for SolidWorks 2013 and 2014, and feature a number of SolidWorks-specific optimizations to ensure designers and engineers get the most out of their workstation. AMD FirePro™ graphics can also unleash the power of RealView® to bring your models to life. SolidWorks 2013 and 2014 now offer advanced shading in real time with RealView, GPU accelerated transparency (OIT), and Ambient Occlusion, for outstanding depth and realism that helps to reduce the need for ray-traced rendering.

AMD is the right choice for professionals working with CATIA V5 and V6. AMD FirePro workstation graphics cards are thoroughly tested and certified for CATIA by Dassault Systèmes for optimized 3D graphics performance and reliability. With AMD FirePro, CATIA users can experience powerful workflow performance gains that allow engineering teams to more easily navigate massive assemblies and make more informed design decisions.
