Warm up your modeling skills for this brand new edition of the Made in 3D Contest! Dassault Systèmes and Innovation Award winner Sculpteo are teaming up again to offer you an opportunity to win an iPad and a 3D print of your winning model.
Dassault Systèmes provides plenty of modeling programs for you to use, including SolidWorks, Catia, 3DVIA Shape. Our import platform 3dvia.com handles a whole range of formats.
The goal of this contest is to design a new kind of product that leverages 3D printing capabilities. Your product can be anything... Art, lamps, furniture, toys, art-toys, jewelry, IT accessories, fashion... All great ideas are welcome!
The contest will run from January 11, 2013 to March 3, 2013. After the contest ends, a community jury will determine a winner and two runners-up. Simply put, the number of likes on each post in the community will determine who the winner is. The grand prize winner will receive an iPad, and all three winners will receive a 3D print of their creation (if it fits Sculpteo's requirements).
The way 3D printing works is simple: given the shape's 3D model, the 3D printer deposits or solidifies tiny amounts of material (plastic, resin, metal), building up the model one layer at a time. With this process, printing Object A or Object B makes no difference, as long as they use the same amount of material. Ultra-customization is now possible thanks to 3D printers - at no additional cost.
The revolution of 3D printing is well under way. The technology, initially used for rapid prototyping by the industry, is gaining in diversity and affordability and threatens to profoundly change a lot of aspects of our lives: Professionals beyond the industry, such as architects, do wonders with 3D printers.
The idea, however, is to give anyone the ability to take advantage of 3D printing, down to mom-and-pop businesses. Even though 3D printers are becoming affordable, they are still somewhat expensive for individuals - and the technology is evolving at a rapid pace. Additionally, different materials mean different processes and printers, raising the bar a bit higher.

For these reasons, turning to an online service not only makes sense, but is simply the best way to take advantage of the whole range of options 3D printing offers.
Sculpteo, winner of a CES Best of Innovations award, is a leader in online printing.
They make 3D printing as easy as possible for everyone: Simply upload your model, pick any available material (9 options in a variety of colors) and specify the size you want. The final product gets expedited in 72 hours and delivered to your home at an affordable price. Apart from this contest, the Sculpteo service is available through 3DVIA.com via the "Send to > Send to Sculpteo 3D Print" link (note that, for legal reasons, you must own the model to print it).
a. You must upload one (1) model by Sunday March 3, 2013. Starting on Friday, January 11, 2013 through Sunday March 3, 2013, upload your best model to Swym. Only new and original work will be considered, 1 submission per user. NO team entries.
b. You must tag your 3D model with "madein3d". Tag your model with the keyword "madein3d" – you must use this exact tag to enter (the tag is not case-sensitive). When you add this tag to your model, you will see a pop-up reminder that you must have read and agreed to the 3DVIA website Terms of Use.
c. Models created using the 3DVIA Shape software which constitute derivative works reproducing existing models created by third parties under the Creative Commons license are eligible for this contest.
