Please ask and answer any and all questions related to using SolidWorks here on 3DVIA!
wait whats solid works?
Well, there's blender, shape, catia, 3ds, OBJ generator, STEP generator, and SolidWorks (one word)
SolidWorks - http://www.solidworks.com - is a 3D Design Product used professionally by many people around the world to help design and build the things we use every day. There are many other professional 3D Design tools as well, depending on what your needs are.
Since SolidWorks users can publish directly to 3DVIA while they are using SolidWorks, it is important to be able to help them here.
I published a model from SolidWorks to 3dvia. I can see it on 3dvia.com using my laptop but when I try to view it on the iPad using 3dvia mobile it gives me back an error message: cannot open exceeded number of triangles of 100000, or something to that effect. It did the same on low resolution export as well.
tried using 3dvia composer to do the same and I got the same message on a much simpler model
Any advice on best practices for getting models out of SolidWorks to view on iPad
Thanks
Alex
I answered this question in the mobile faq post you created.
How can the colors and textures exported to 3dvia.com? The modells look not like the same in Solidworks. It would be very good to get a Solidworks-Real-View-export from Solidworks
I use Solidworks vor Building Information Modelling. Is it possible to export to 3dxml the metadatas and object attributes? It would be great to get detailed informations inside a scene of any object of an included model. i.e. click on a wall and I get the informations about it. or a door, column, ...
Right now exporting that data is not included in the SolidWorks 3DXML file, but you're right that it would be great if it was.
We'll add it to the list of "Should haves"!
Sorry, the same answer applies to your question about colors, textures and decals not being supported. We're working on it.
Let me add my wish for support of textures and decals from SolidWorks to 3DVIA.
Is there *any* way to get anything like a texture or decal from SolidWorks into 3DVIA, even some non-obvious workaround?
Texture I think so, decal probably not. Step by step comming tomorrow.
Part, face and feature colors are correctly brought in to 3DXML files.
Textures and decals are not translated into the 3DXML file. This is being worked on by the SolidWorks and 3DVIA developers for a future release.
Hello,
I'm very interested by Solidworks to 3DVIA and more precisely to 3DVIA Studio.
What do you think about to use 3DVIA Composer in the pipeline?
3DVIA Composer open native Solidworks files.
Then, we can use 3DVIA Compose to optimize the model (tessellation, occlusion, remove small part, merge, explode...).
Then finally export to 3DXML from 3DVIA Composer.
In that way, do we know if we still have the same limitation (texture for instance) than for the direct export to 3DVIA from SolidWorks?
And an other question, when using the pipe SolidWorks -> 3DVIA Composer -> 3DVIA Studio, we lost instance and part name, and material are duplicated.
Is it the same, if we use the direct export to 3DVIA.com from SolidWorks?
Thanks you.
Alexandre
Composer can open the native SolidWorks file and is a good workflow for reducing polygons and occluding and simplifying a model to export for a lightweight model for Studio.
Texturng is still a current limitation with teh models.
Have not tried it yet directly from SoildWorks.

Maybe this reply from Don can help:

Hi All!
I am the new IT Manager for a manufacturer that uses both Solidworks and 3DVia Composer in their daily duties.
We are on SW 2011 SP4 and using 3DVia Composer 2011.
I am new to both software applications and I am not an end user of the product. I just have the wonderful job of supporting a great group of engineers that use them.
Our current issue is getting exported images from 3Dvia Composer (using a SolidWorks assembly model) to load into MS Publisher for technical and service manuals.
We have tried both CGM and EPS exports (save as) then inserted into MS Publisher. Within 3DVia Composer, the images look great. However, when inserted into MS Publisher, the images look and print pixelated.
Once the SW model is imported/loaded, all the engineer does is get the image to their liking. Preview (image looks great), then does a Save As. Tried both EPS and CMG as these are formats that MS Publisher can recognize. Once in MS Publisher, the images look fair to poor, nothing like the previewed image. We have tried to just link the exported image and embed. Both give the same output within MS Publisher.
Is there a better way to do this? Again I am new with these software packages, but open to suggestions of the community. We have tried working with our support/reseller team, but we have that support ticket open for over 4 weeks without resolution.
Is MS Publisher the best way to create a service and technical manual?
Is there a way to export in an image format that supports better image quality (vectored graphics)?
Thanks for all the help!
Frank
From what I understand, this is just the low resolution preview in Publisher. When you print a document, they are fine, you can publish to a PDF from Publisher and they look good as well. I think the workflow as recommended by SolidWorks is to show the final published PDF in the demo.

Thanks Goat!
I will talk with them about this. Seems they have tried this in the past with marginal success. But I would like to see it in a final rendering. Also, it might be that we are wanting color rather than B/W images and using it with Technical Publication rather than High Resolution images.
Will let you know how it turns out.
