Is there a way to open an existing 3DXML file in 3DVia Shape?

You can only edit them in Shape if they are created in Shape, however you can find the model using the Included Models search bar. Just search a tag from the model in the search bar at the bottom left.
If you want to open a Shape created model in Shape, and it's allowed (3dvia has an option to disallow editing) go to the model and choose Edit>Open in 3dvia Shape, where you can then edit the model. This only works with Shape created models.
