I do think Linux is great, but most Nick Jr games are Flash or Shockwave, are they not? There are only one or two that use 3dvia Player. Even so, those are the best ones, and we do hear a lot of "the game at Nick Jr won't initialize" and it is still mostly Nick Jr's fault. Notice the word "Player" Nick Jr made the game and 3dvia didn't. Yet, this is simply not the case when it comes to Linux. Our school laptops use Ubuntu, and while I prefer Windows, looking at the Wine example with Shape, it shouldn't be that hard to support it. Plus, look at all the users who want it!

I would also like a linux port. I'm a software engineer and would like to get my kids interested in Linux. Unfortunately like so many others they enjoy the Nick Jr game which are more and more reliant on your technology.

Great, why does Dassault Systemes not release a package with wine like Google did with Picasa (and work with the Wine community)? Schools are moving to Google Apps, Adope is dropping support for flash on mobile, and Microsoft appears to be giving up on Silverlight (as the march of open standards and HTML5 continues). . . . Very few people will take the time to create a forum account to let you know you should add support for Linux. Most will just begin considering 3dvia and the sites that use it as broken legacy web content. This is no longer the late 90's . . .

I'm working in the field of bio-informatics, and I see a lot of 3d images being used in a lot of projects. Since I know quite a bit about 3d graphics I get a lot of questions about making their 3d images interactive so that they can publish a link with their scientific articles such that readers can view certain networks or protein structures in an interactive way. There are some free protein structure viewers, but they lack in flexibility and interactivity, which is why I think 3DVIA can be a great way for the scientific community to share ideas in 3d. The problem that a lot of scientists face now is that lots of them mainly, if not only, use Linux. I would greatly appreciate it if you could find a way to make this great tool work under Linux so that also the scientific community can start using it. Thank you.

I setup Linux Mint (Debian/Ubuntu derivative project) on a PC for my 4-year old daughter to use. She has lots of fun with TuxPaint and Nick Jr. online games and videos, but just today she picked a game that needs the 3DVIA player and I landed in this thread.

Since there already is a Mac OS X player, I can't imagine why you can't make a Linux installer for Firefox. Mac OS X is really BSD UNIX as it is, so 95% of the job is already done. You just need to make a .DEB (and maybe a .RPM also) package installer.

Thank you for your answer. I am glad you feel this way.

The tutorial I wrote is a solution only for technical experts who can spare 1 full day to install 3DVIA Shape on Linux. I cannot use this solution myself because it is too slow on my machine. However, some other user seemed to get good performances.

Anyway, it shows mainly 2 things:
1/ The Linux port of your 3DVIA applications is possible thanks to Wine.
2/ The Linux port cost is low: a single developer managed a 1st draft over some nights and week-ends.

I would like to point out a success story that could inspire you. This is the story of Google working on improving Wine in order to release Picasa on Linux for a low cost.

What I am trying to say is that you have all you need to support Linux. Now, I think that what blocks you is more a strategic decision than a technical difficulty.

Now why would you fear censorship? <img src="http://www.3dvia.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I love that blog and I love it when users help us develop a free 3D future <img src="http://www.3dvia.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> I will be spreading the joy of that blog internally and even a comment or two of my own!

Thank you for all that hard work, if it was you that wrote that <img src="http://www.3dvia.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I also agree with your views, but my own personal opinion is that google has more engineers than artists, so they break technical ground faster, and we try to sort out the usability through the eye's of as many new to 3d people as we can <img src="http://www.3dvia.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I strongly believe that your own success relies on full interoperability (e.g. Linux, Mac OS, Windows, and Chrome OS).
Google has understood this for a long time: they delivered Chrome, Earth, Picasa, Sketcher, O3D, (etc.) on ALL platforms. And they are successful, as anyone can assess.
You have to keep in mind that the Linux community is made of lots of developers. Developers are the guys who develop applications for the Internet. Developers are potential users of your platform.
As a developer, I cannot use 3DVIA Studio because it does not support Linux. Indeed, I do not want my websites to be limited to the ever-decreasing Windows audience. I believe that it will stop many others.

PS: a solution exists with wine for 3DVIA Shape (http://3dviaonlinux.eblogus.com/).
PS2: I hope I won't be censured!!

Well, Google Sketcher does not work well on Linux either, as I remind now!

There are no current plans in the pipeline to include support for Linux but its something we can look at if enough interest is displayed. If anyone would like Linux support you can post here <img src="http://www.3dvia.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title=";)" class="bb_smilies" />

I really like the 3DVIA technology and games that are made with it. However, I use Linux operating system and I can' t use the 3DVIA Player in it. Do you plan to develop 3DVIA Player for Linux? It would be great!
