I designed this model a few years ago for a multimedia Project.
When I read about the 3DVia challenge I thought it was a good opportunity to show this model and translate it from the paper to a 3Dmodel make by my own.
The idea was to create a vehicle capable to do all kind of movements in the air with extreme agility.
The main characteristics of this model is the variable position of the four propellers around the rails of the main structure that allows to move in all the possible directions by the composition of the thrust vectors of each one and the independent movement of the pilot located into the central sphere using the gyroscopic structure.
Each propeller can rotate around its own axis and blades can rotate around its own axis too.
I thought it was interesting to show all the rotation possibilities in the 3Dmodel for a better understanding.
With the correct design of the pilot cabin Sphera could also navigate like a submarine but it was not the main purpose of this model.
The configuration of the propellers shown in this model is one of the infinite ones. The pilot will determine the direction and velocity and the computer of Sphera will calculate the best position of the propellers to reach the parameters introduced by the pilot.

Wow! Fantastic idea and a great model to back it up! The arrows really do help the viewer realize all the possible motions. Excellent!
thank you dswavely, it was a hard job to translate it from paper to 3D but I think that this concept could be good.
Imagine this vehicle in movement!!
The pilot was inside the vehicle, but maybe it was an error of exportation to 3ds.
I´ll correct this as soon as possible
wow I wont say this is a still model instead this looks like already in action. Thanks for explaining your model It really helps in better understanding. Also the different position of propeller helps to understand the concept in reality. Great.
Thank you XQH_XXX!! this model has very complex movements so I thought the explanation was necessary to understand it. The next step,…animate it!!
I can imagine that it was a difficult concept to model in 3D, but you did a great job. I would love to see a vehicle like this in action! Maybe you could build a radio controlled scale model of it…that would be quite a project.
Wow that looks complicated.
It was difficult, but when you see the 3Dmodel done it makes worth all the work; don´t you think so?? Your suggestion is very interesting because I think this model could really work!!!, but this project involvs the resolution of mechanical, constructive and programming problems so I need a team to develop the remote-controlled prototype. As ntweisen (thank you for your comments ntweisen!!!), if the 3DModel looks complicated, imagin how complicated turn it into reallity could be!!!. But everything is possible with a good team. May be one day it could become true.
The model is really cool, looks like something that could be found in a video game. but building it for real… it would be really over complicating things, why would there be any need for the propellers to change there position on the outside of the craft? just changing the speed of the propellers on one side could change the direction just fine, without needing to point the propeller in a different direction.
You’re correct that it would require a team to do it properly, but even a clumsy prototype would be an exceptionally rewarding project.
This would have been a great challenge for the Monster Garage ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Garage ) team, but alas, they are no more.
3dvia, sadly, does not support animation.
It reminds me of Jody Foster movie, Contact? Must be quite a sight seeing all the machinery in motion. Great dance .. The concept is to own a time machine. Good work.
lol, that does kinda remind me of the machine from contact
Hey I want a real one! Talk about off-roading!! Yee Ha!!
Maybe we could get Dean Kamen to make one instead of the miserable Segway thing?
Hello everybody!!! sorry for my delay.
ilovegoodcheese you are right, there is no needing to change propellers position outside the craft in order to change direction (rotation around propeller´s own axis is necessary) but, as you comment, Sphera have to change the speed of the propellers (althought this is not necessary becouse sphera has controlable pitch propellers)and changing this way the direction you reduce thrust. Other advantage changing the possition of the propellers outside the craft is to reduce interferences between each propeller jet and increase the maneuver possibilities. I hope I convenve you with my arguments ;-)
on the other hand, the structure designed in contact was very interesting, but Jody was into a simple sphere and outside were a few rings moving around.
Inside my model, the pilot is into a structure whose main purpose is make independent the pilot possition from craft position (this is a gyroscopic structure)
billybobsue, I didn´t know who is as Dean Kamen and the Segway,… but now I know, Segway is very popular!!! with this kind of inventions the day we does not needing of arms and legs will arrive soon!!!
I think Segway is a good invention in order to avoid the use of our car in short distances and also for people with movility handicap.
By the moment Sphera is just a dream Segway a reality,… maybe one day it will change ;-D.
Its nice, but too chaotic. There are too many details, and it makes it look cluttered.
Aside from that, wow. You must have spent a long time on it.
Ok, I´ll try to simplify. I´ve uploaded a simplified model. http://www.3dvia.com/epcinnova/models/734F56697B4D5F71
Tahnk you for your comments ThunderMonkey :-)
