Since I’m always happy when other modelers upload their works in progress, I figured I would too. Looking at it, I just realized that I’ve made some improvements since this version, so I’ll have to get that uploaded soon.
I’ve been working away on this Cadillac LMP built for the 24 hours of Le Mans for a long time. They stopped racing the thing years ago, but to me old race cars just get more and more beautiful!

i love le mans, my favourite team is aston martin, with the dbr9, i just love it. anyways, great model, will you make an interior?
That was quick! I’ve been in love with le Mans since I was a wee thing and the Ferraris, Ford GT40’s and Chaparrals were all mixing it up. You may notice as you go along that I take every opportunity to tell everyone how wonderful it is :).
Aston Martin has also been a favorite of mine too. Although the winning Bentley stole my heart for years.
Thanks for the compliment. There’s so much left to do on the exterior that I may be in my dotage before I get to the interior…
Only thing as good as LeMans is GT Prototype racing. Awesome cars. Great model Don
I agree Omind! I liked Le Mans better when the top dogs were more like GT Prototypes than F1 cars with a tiny bit more bodywork.
Thanks!
Hi Don, Is there anyway its possible to show how did you create this car concept? This is a complicate surface structures & I have no idea about how to create in 3dvia..
great model Don…
LeMans (like the Paris-Dakkar rally) is an epitome of racing… although i don’t follow them they way i follow F1, these endurance races amaze me like anything… 24 hours of excruciating racing…. forget about the machines, just imagine the hard work of the people involved, especially the drivers… thats’ human spirit… pushing the mortals to ‘the’ limits…
@the machines at LeMans – GT40s, Porsches, Aston Martins, Buggatis… some of the most remembered cars…
@model: it’s a good one…. i hope the ‘work in progress’ tag comes off soon :) and we see this one in the Top 10… for a change your model appears in the Top 10 and we write comments :) hehehe
@XQH_XXX: this model was made in SolidWorks 2008 SP5. If you go to the STATS tab adjoining the model viewer you get to know the details of the associated model… like “Created with”, “Downloads” etc… creating such surfaces are pretty difficult with 3DVIA Shape… I won’t say impossible but mighty difficult… :)
@XQH-XXX – abu_roadking is right. This particular version of the car was worked on in SolidWorks 2008. I am not particularly good with complex surfaces, like Mark Biasotti ( http://www.3dvia.com/blog/3dvia-featured-artist-mark-biasotti/ ). I have been trying to get better as I go along.
Even for the experts there are many ways to do the same thing. This blog post by Josh Mings ( http://www.solidsmack.com/the-iphone-3g-model-take-2-plus-surfacing-resources-and-coolness-from-mark-biasotti/2009-05-19/ ) and this conversation thread ( http://www.productdesignforums.com/index.php?showtopic=10292&hl=iphone&st=0 ) will show you what I mean.
3DVIA Shape is an amazingly capable free program, but simply cannot do many of the things (like Class A surfacing) that the professional programs can.
I keep trying to find ways to approximate compex surfaces and upload examples. I’m hoping that others will find similar workarounds, so that we can do more with Shape.
@abu_roadking – The endurance races are my favorites too. They make it far more obvious how well the entire team works together. So many people involved in racing never get the credit that they’re due. Without each one of them doing their job, the driver wouldn’t have a chance.
I won’t put my own models in the Top 10 because there are so many more deserving models and it certainly wouldn’t be fair :)Great model! Your models is always looking so clean. What 3d application is your favourite?
Thanks mynameisoscarjo! SolidWorks is my favorite, mainly because I have so many years experience using it, but also because it can do just about anything I need it to – as long as I keep learning and listening and pushing myself.
It’s true, you can upload more than one file type to 3dvia.
@Don..I am kind of disappointed looking at the fact that 3dvia donot capable of doing complicate surfaces that others cad software can easily do..I was trying to make a car concept but have no idea how to get those surfaces in 3dvia.. may be I should leave trying more & think about creating something else..
@XQH_XXX – I too am trying hard to find ways to develop more complex surfaces using 3DVIA Shape. It is frustrating, since I also come from a long CAD background.
3DVIA Shape has improved immensely in just the short period of time that it has been public. I’m not sure what the future development plans are, but I try to get the most of the things that it can easily do that CAD can’t and work on ways to get more from the tools that are available.
Cars are certainly more complex than just about anything in the consumer world. I enjoy each new advance in 3DVIA Shape and look forward to future improvements. I certainly don’t expect a free product to be capable of everything that CATIA is :)
How is it going?
:( Haven’t touched it in a couple months, but there’s a good reason – the 3DVIA community keeps me so busy :D
any other model available for a lmp1 car ?
If you use “lmp” as a search term – http://www.3dvia.com/search/models/lmp – you’ll see that there’s not much there yet.
