Uploaded by dbonner 11/03/2009 13:44:44 Changed from a hand-sketched airfoil to a proper NACA 4420 for the main wing. Also the rear booms are longer to ensure sufficient stability in pitch. Because the wing is 2 meters in chord, and is working in ground effect, the center of lift can move about a lot from front to back. To make the craft stable in pitch, the tail surface must be at the end of a long arm. The russian ekranoplan designers gave their craft very large tails and a long fuselage for this same reason. So far I have designed and built a hovercraft, see it in action on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IczJzM7W010

Great to read about your progress as you develop your design! I learn something too.

Just in case new viewers don’t know about Ekranoplans there is more info, pictures and video here: http://www.vincelewis.net/ekranoplan.html

Actually if you use a special shaped wing you can obtain stability in pitch without the long tail, but I wanted a straight wing for construction simplicity and I think that was the reasoning that the Russians made too.

Interesting gaming side note. The Erkanoplans are a new unit type in the expansion of World In Conflict :)
