Michael White (toymaker) – Celebration of an Artist

Michael White (toymaker) represented all of the good things that the 3DVIA Community values. He always had a kind word and plenty of encouragement for other modelers. He was a skilled Google SketchUp modeler and covered a wide spectrum of subject and emotions. He was quick to make us smile with Elmer Fudd or Mr. Krabs, but had a firm grasp on detailed modeling of the real world too. And he never shied away from the tough subjects either.

It is with great sadness we must relay from his mother, Jean White, and his sister, Muriel White, that Michael has recently passed away. We choose to celebrate his contributions here as a tribute. Please, feel free to leave your thoughts as a comment at the end. You can email his mother or sister at the addresses that they have posted here.

There is much to celebrate about Michael’s participation in the 3DVIA community. For the real Michael White, I would suggest reading his Featured Artist article, which is in his own words.

The numbers and the awards tell a little more of the story. Michael was #5 on our all-time Top 10 list, having been in the very first one and then 32 more after that! He also had Honorable Mentions in four more. He was in the Best of the Best in 2009 and 2010. He was also the Champion in Challenge #13 and was a finalist in six more. His 135 models brought him a lot of joy and satisfaction and brought us all a lot of fun too!

Thank you Michael!

This was Michael’s winner in the very first Top 10 ever!

Animals, real and imagined, were always sure to show up in Michael’s models.

Dizzy the Dragon is one of my favorites!

Take a look at the detail and attention to textures in his humble bee.

History was another theme that Michael would work with, both here with the Monitor from the Civil War…

…and with the Liberty Bell from about a century before that.

Michael had a wild imagination too! This one is beautiful in so many ways.

Robby gets your sci-fi gears going.

And, of course, Michael was part of the (in)famous Squirrel Wars here on 3DVIA!

His Seashell again shows his range of subject and great abilities as a modeler.

This was his Championship entry in Challenge #13.

With that, I’ll leave Mr. Krabs to give a cheerful wave goodbye to Michael from all of us at 3DVIA. We will miss you!!
