Video – Interview with Don Swavely
Most of our users know Don virtually, through his constant feedback and attention to the users on 3DVIA. I interviewed Don to show you the other side of Don. Many do not know about Don’s amazing career: He has worked as a mechanical design engineer; from toys to neonatal blood pressure units - in advertising; both trade and consumer - and making automotive sculptures for clients around the world. Basically, Don has been involved in all parts of the design process.
However, there has always been one constant in all of Don’s experiences, one common language: “3D”. Check out this video to get to know Don:
Don is always monitoring the site, so when you receive a comment from Don, you are receiving a comment from an expert in 3D!

Go, Don!
Thanks – onward we shall go! :)
Don’s a great guy, nice interview!
Your pal,
Devon T. Sowell
Thank you Devon. Especially since you’re at the top of the “great guy” list yourself!
Great Interview Don.
you do an excellent job on 3DVia. Thank you for all your support and the kind words, you always have for all of us.
Best regards
Alfred
Thank you Alfredix!
You all deserve the best I can do! It is a privilege to be part of this wonderful community.
Nice Don!,
I know I had that Weebles Haunted House when I was a kid. I think I got it either on Christmas (1976) or a couple weeks later on my birthday. I think I remember seeing the commercials on TV for it as well :)
Thanks sandman!
That Haunted House was the only toy idea I ever had at Hasbro that made it into production and it makes me feel great to hear that people played with it and actually remember it – thanks!
Did you ever notice how much a mint condition Weebles Haunted House is going for on ebay.
$300.00! The Weebles ghost is $55.00 alone!.. I have to ask, do you own a Weebles Haunted House Don :D
Wow! $55.00 for the Weebles Ghost! That’s amazing. We used to have loads of all the different Weebles at our desks as we tried to think up new ideas for toys. I don’t own a Haunted House – never did. I was more into toy trucks (I know that’s a big surprise).
Dswavely is a great guy!
I guess you have to do it at some point!
Thanks tomy – I appreciate it!
It was obvious to me from the start “about 8 months ago”
that Don is a Great & very Helpful guy! BTW the way you said
“Vast Experience” sounded like a jab or an inside joke.
Play Nice!
Thanks toymaker! I think Cliff really meant “old” but “vast experience” sounds much nicer :P
Hehe…We only touched on Don’s Vast experience, this video could have been an hour long.
He was already using 3D when I was still in diapers though. ;^)
Like I said – he just means “old”. :)
i tough you’re younger…no offense
don-a italian name.you really look like one!i always wondered about that
No offense taken :D There’s way more German in my ancestry than anything else, but being an American mutt means I can look like anything :P
ok,ok,speeches time!
I want to thank Don for everything he made for me in the months since i am here. With my whole poor english he understood what i need, when i need.He was my best pal,or one of the best pals since i not to offense nobody(i love you guys too!).I don’t remember anyone complaining of him ,or him harming(verbal) someone. His top ten ‘editions’ are one of the most attractive things on the site, being ready to nominalise even the most newbie, but the best guys here too.Anytime ready to help somebody, anytime, whatever who or how is the person.
His help was the most powerful fuel, better than the antimateer,to proppel me in my future career.
He made me think the 3D is not a good thing, but a awful good one!!!
There are 3 kinds of people:
-kind people
-mean people
-mean people who try to be kind
Don is from the cream of the first category
those words are mine, full of respect, for our ‘Mr.Swavely’
I’m humbled by your compliments. Thank you for making such kind comments! You have just made a lot of hard work worth every moment :D
You and I have worked hard together to enjoy each other, 3D modeling and 3DVIA. Thank you for your part of the effort too. You have grown tremendously in a very short period of time and added a lot of vitality to the 3DVIA community!
OK now I’m scared “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” Is happening!
They got Sady!
Anybody could be next!
RUN!
I’m already in hiding :D
what?
ok,was weird for me too,guys
i don’t use to say words like those too often, but i made it for don
we all know how i was at first.i tried to change.maybe i not fully succeeded, but at least here,on 3dvia,i try to be more kind.
but is still me >:)
I know that it was difficult for you say, which makes it more valuable to me.
We all have different sides to our personalities, have good days and bad days and do smart things and not so smart things. So, once we all get to know each other it is easier to tell whether it is a bad day speaking or your other side. :D Keep all sides of yourself, that’s what makes you unique.
don,smile
emmy had almost had lipstick in the ears!
why so serious?relax man,the 3d is the warmest place possible,especially on 3dvia
“Lipstick in the ears” – I like that!
I was (am) very uncomfortable to be in front of the camera in the first place, so saying something that made sense was more on my mind than smiling. I do actually know how to do that and people have actually seen me do it. :P
No Never change to please someone else!
Be Your self, If I did not like You,
I would not Pick on you !
The world needs More people who speak their minds!
toymaker, don’t mock me anymore otherwise i’ll turn back in the evil sady
just want to say thanks to don also for his always quick responses on a problem his helpfull comments and links..
he makes it a pleasure to be a part of the 3dvia world..
and 3dvia is going slowly to be the biggest 3d models site on the internet.
and already now there is a lot of great 3d artist here not just 2-5 persons but 15-20 very skillfull and amazingly good 3d modelers..
i also like the many artist’s like abu_roadking and Sady there is making great models by combining several diferent models in to one new model..
and sady please dont loose your evil mr hyde personallty that would be a huge shame..
thanks
Thank you, smike, for your very kind words! From a modeler of your caliber, they mean a lot.
And, sady, I agree with toymaker and smike – don’t lose who you really are – you’re way too much fun this way. :)
After getting a headache to see the video I finally figured out that its my office’s security police that was not allowing me to see this video & so I watched it from my home. Really nice video Don specially because of we used to know you from a distance by the way you communicate & this video actually shows who you really are as a person. Its great to hear your voice & about your lifelong experience. I am new to 3dvia & its a huge path lying ahead to learn more from you & other great modelers. Thanks for sharing this video…
Thank you Parth. Cliff did all the hard work of babying me through the process (I don’t do well in front of a camera) and then adding the elements that make it more interesting, all on top of the meticulous editing to make it hold together.
I’m sorry that you have problems watching our videos from the office. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon, since office security is so important. I end up doing the same thing for some business web sites which are not permitted by our IT people :D
Enjoy each step along the path – we all learn from each other.
Cliff/Don,
great gob, Guys. This is the first 3dvia pod that I have seen. Now I’ll have to go see the rest.
Cliff,
Don is the best it good that someone has done an current Interview with him showing his passion, he rocks. If you look his blood flows 3D.
Don,
Thanks for all the hard work. We all appreciate it. Hope to see you around soon in the community. Catch you later.
Randy
Hey Randy!
Thanks for all the nice comments! Cliff has been doing a great job introducing 3DVIA folk to the community. He really had a tough time with me (lots of babying and coaxing needed).
I do hope to get back out off of the computer and into the community more – some day or decade..
Keep up your own fantastic efforts!
Don
Nice interview, Don you looks very kind, can see you in front of me eating a green, juicy apple :)
Thank you for all your kind comments, sometimes I think about stop with blender, and play more guitar for example, but your and the other 3dvia peopes comments made me continue having fun.
Thank you Don, just say your favourite sportcar, and i’ll make it for you :)
Wow! Thank you Oscar! You just made my day, week, month – you name it – the idea that we as a community can inspire you to do more 3D modeling and help you enjoy it is our reason for being here!
I had 3DVIA open last night at home (actually I have it open almost all the time every day) and my wife walked by and saw your Alfa model in the home page Top 10 image and stopped, looked and said “Wow, that’s really nice!” Her very first car was an old clapped-out Alfa that someone gave her and she helped me for nine years doing cars as Co-Hog Toys, so she knows a thing or two about nice cars.
The point is that your models really are good, so keep it up! I’ll always be one of your biggest fans!
Jim Hall’s Chaparral 2F – http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/88/Chaparral-2F-Chevrolet.html – would be my choice, if you ever have time :). Jim Hall’s progression of GT cars in the late 60’s turned me away from drag racing to find my true love – endurance racing. His ingenuity and engineering skills have inspired me ever since!
Thanks again for really making me happy!
