Call to Action!: Shotgun

3DVIA’s Call to Action!

This is a new program I am starting here that attempts to bring our Community members together with our Developer Community. We have alot of artists constantly expressing their creativity on 3DVIA.com and we also have just as many developers working in Virtools and MP who are always creating fun and entertaining Scene’s.

This week we are looking for the one weapon no game can do without: The Shotgun. In the category of power there is no substitute. The shotgun fills the role of close combat devastation and in most every game this simple weapon can spell disaster in as little as one hit. Many games have tried to re-invent this weapon, but in every incarnation, the shotgun re-iterates its loud booming message: Chak-Chik,  BOOM!

3DVIA Shape users making models for 3DVIA Challenges can ignore the triangle count limit.  This special rule will remain in effect until upcomming updates to 3DVIA Shape add the capability to display triangle count and control tesselation before export.

  1. no restrictions mean isn’t even necesarry to be made by you
ok, i’ll upload the dead space kinetic shotgun ;)

  2. No sady thats not what it means, it means no age restrictions or restrictions on employee’s participating, it still needs to be original work. You know that by now.

This is a fun thing were we can make game and web ready models, light and ready to use. Not find how many things we can grab from other sources.

  3. Just a couple quick questions for this competition or for anything else, how does one find out how many triangles a model contains and what is a good way to go about capturing the pixel texture?
    -Thanks

    • Good Question!

in 3Ds Max ,what we usually count is the polygon count
But in one of the exporters the triangle count is mentioned
(That is how I got to know the triangle count in the file I uploaded for the CAT before)

Other than that I don’t know where to find it

      • Ya thanks for the response, i have used 3ds max in the past but i am currently trying out 3DVIA’s Shape program and so Im wondering if there is a way to tell in that program also.

        • Progresively during your time building the shotgun you can upload it to 3dvia as a private model and under the stats tab you’ll see how many triangles it currently has. Then you can just continue updating the model.

I think I will have a conversation with the Shape developers and see if I can add polygon count and more control of polygon density as you are constructing shapes. In its current incarnation its not very fair for shape users in this challenge. Following the conversation I think I will update the Call to Action rules to ignore the triangle count limit for Shape entries, untill we add the proper tools to the program. Look for that update on Monday morning.

There are many ways to reduce the polygon count after you finish construction, in case you go over the mark.

    • Once you upload a model, it will say the amount of triangles in the stats, second tab to the left over the description.

  4. I made a water shotgun

  5. Arrgh, must…. finish….. shotgun…….

  6. Hmm, what happened to this contest…. not much support esp from mods.
