3DVIA Top 10 3D Models – 074

The ten best 3D models and one exceptional Scene uploaded to 3DVIA.com during the week of Saturday, May 15th through Friday, May 21st, 2010 are highlighted here. The Top 10 Team has all the equipment they need to tackle the job – from a basic vice to the booming M113. I think this week’s Scene should be our Team headquarters where we can contemplate our virtues and beautiful sculpture too. Come on in and join us!

(The “Easy links to the previous Top 10 lists” is getting really long, so it has been moved to right after the current week’s models and Scene. Top 10 – 069 and – 070 are being worked on [gradually, gradually they are getting closer to being done] and will be posted when they’re done, sorry for the delays.)

The Top 10:

One of the best Scenes on 3DVIA is ModelMia’s Loft by ModelMia (imagine that!) created using 3DVIA Scenes, the available 3DVIA models and Smart Objects. You can tell that she knows her stuff when you feel like walking in and settling down in any one of several elegant, yet contemporary areas. Please invite me when you have an online party here! [ModelMia lives in the US]

Detailed mechanical assemblies, such as 总装图 by qq395081762, always get my motor running! Even though I don’t know what it does, I want to touch it, take it apart and understand it. qq395081762 used SolidWorks 2010.

Sculptural shapes get me motivated and Wheel-Envelop by FLouis is a beauty. The “flaws” in the surfaces only add to the appeal. Dassault Systemes V6 was FLouis’ modeling tool. [FLouis lives in France]

Gaine TC is a “grain conveyor chain with a valve and a hopper evacuation” by Skulblaka – very nicely modeled using SolidWorks 2010. Great job on the details. [Skulblaka lives in France]

This entire A6M2N L by ale80 is only just over 100KB! Talk about polygon frugality – great job!! It was uploaded in 3DS format. [ale80 lives in Norway]

Shelly (shellyshd) exquisitely captures the essence of the scene in Mountains. I want to go there right now to enjoy the clear crisp air and incredible views! Shelly used 3DVIA Shape. [shellyshd lives in New Zealand]

I like buildings, both frivolous and functional. B12 by Richit is clean, well-presented and was uploaded in OBJ format.

This detailed Vice by petzl is more complicated than it looks at first glance and is very nicely modeled. Petzl shows us his increasing prowess with 3DVIA Shape.  [petzl lives in Estonia]

Abu (abu_roadking) once again proves his 3D story-telling abilities with Satan’s Sale. Abu has combined the words of Paulo Coelho with his own imagination using 3DVIA Shape to remind us of some simple truths.  [Abu lives in India]

This M113-A3 Mk19 Armored by Alfred (alfredix) packs a nasty punch with its MK19 grenade launcher and plenty of protection for the shooter! Alfred modeled it using Pro/E, translated it into STEP format and then uploaded. [Alfred lives in Germany]

Junas by boisonfray is a well-done classical structure beautifully accentuated using stone color. It’s just plain great! It was uploaded in IGES format.

Just so everyone knows, the order that the Top 10 are displayed is based on color, type of model and how I’m feeling, not any particular ranking. I just rearrange them until I like the way it looks. It’s as simple as that!

Here’s a brief recap of what I look for when I select the Top 10:

Variety – One of the most important factors. I try to show models created using lots of different software products and showing lots of different ways of using 3D. I include brief comments on why I chose each model.

Creativity, unusual subject matter and humor – These are big factors. We should all be having fun and feel free to model our passions!

Models entered in the 3DVIA Challenge contests will not be considered – They’re already getting plenty of attention and I want to spotlight models we may have missed.

There is no reward given – Other than the satisfaction of being noticed, spotlighted and being brought to the attention of more modelers. In my personal experience, the pleasure of having my work appreciated is the ultimate reward anyway.

From time to time I will make mistakes and not follow my own rules – I will review these mistakes on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I will change the post and sometimes I won’t. I will be consistently inconsistent. I am human.

Your comments are always welcomed and encouraged! Your responses will help the modelers and the 3DVIA community as a whole. Feel free to bring other models to my attention and let me know why they attracted you. (PLEASE NOTE: In order to make it easier to explore, all photos are linked directly to the model’s page.)

One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.

  1. I like the idea of Satan selling an old VHS player. Obviously he turns into Blue-Ray age :)
    Great model Abu :)

also “well done!” to the other modellers this week. Great selection Don. Thanks for including me.

    • If anyone can get away with selling VHS equipment nowadays it would have to be the devil! :)

      Thanks and you’re welcome too!

      • the VHS player went well with the story :) and you’re right Don… only Devil himself could get away with it :D
