3DVIA Top 20 models – 054

The best models uploaded to 3DVIA.com during the week of Saturday, November 7th through Friday, January 1st, 2010 are highlighted here. This post covers the whole time that I was out at the end of last year and thus completes the entire set of 2009 Top 10 posts! Since it covers multiple weeks, I upped the total to 20 to even have a chance of pointing out the highlights. There were so many good models that I hope folks don’t get upset if their personal favorite wasn’t included. It was more difficult by far than only working with a week’s worth of models. Thanks to everyone who did contribute so many great models!
Now I can start work on the “Best of the Best 2009″ post including stats! That should stir up a hornet’s nest. :)
Easy links to the previous Top 10 lists: 001 – 002 – 003 – 004 – 005 – 006 – 007 – 008 – 009 – 010 – 011 – 012 – 013 – 014 – 015 – 016 – 017 -018 – 019 – 020 – 021 – 022 – 023 – 024 – 025 – 026 – 027 – 028 – 029 – 030 – 031 – 032 – 033 – 034 – 035 – 036 – 037 – 038 – 039 – 040 – 041 – 042 – 043 – 044 – 045 – 046 – 047 – 048 – 049 – 050 – 051 – 052 – 053 – 055 – 056 – 057 – 058 – 059
The Top 20:
Michael (smike) had a whole group of Babylon 5 vehicles to choose from. Lockheed SA-32A Thunderbolt Heavy Fighter Version is my favorite! Please(!) go visit and appreciate the massive amount of work that Michael also did to create his presentation of the model and its process of being built. I used just one of his many images in the composite one above as a teaser. Michael does his modeling using Google SketchUp. [smike lives in Denmark]
350Z by Marco (janka_mtex) is a totally sweet and highly-detailed model that he lovingly built using CATIA V5. What a beauty!! [Marco lives in Serbia & Montenegro]
The way the graphic forms work perfectly with the guitar form make Green Meanie Guitar by Shannon (sandman14) a real standout! The colors are great too. :) Shannon always uses Google SketchUp. [Shannon lives in the US]

What a great character! Rabbit is one of many cartoon characters owned by Dosch Designs and can be found in their Comic Characters V2 model set. Our user, balaya, mistakenly downloaded the model from another source and then uploaded it here in order to be able to use it in a game that he is developing. I apologize to Dosch Design for the mistake and the confusion.
This sultry, yet substantial Toaster by trigram_VMP (modeled using 3DVIA Shape), looks sturdy enough to double as a trebuchet if needed, Your toast will definitely be DONE! [trigram_VMP lives in India]
Lots of nice detail make Residence122 by fellowA an exemplary model of a real estate property using 3DVIA Shape. You can easily visualize walking the paths and enjoying a break on one of the benches in-between sessions in the main buildings.

Bud by Abu (abu_roadking) is simply gorgeous and gorgeous because of its simplicity. The modeling is like the nature he is portraying – just enough detail to make it work and richly beautiful in form. Abu used 3DVIA Shape. [Abu lives in India]
It’s a blast to get lost inside of IdeShape013 by Axel (Idemaxel)! The color and forms make me feel like a kid again – let’s go! Axel uploaded this treat in 3DS Format. [Axel lives in Belgium]
Everyone needs to keep learning all the time and Bulby is getting his education in Bulby in School by Parth (XQH_XXX) using 3DVIA Shape. [Parth lives in India]

Concept v E5gbil is an original beauty by Oscar (mynameisoscarjo). The middle image come from his own renders and I love the color! Oscar uses Blender to let his imagination loose. [Oscar lives in Sweden]
6611-12sm by Tom (macsurveyr) was created using MeshLab. It is great technically, historically and its beauty is just breath-taking. Great subject Tom!
perecat1 pays homage to several outstanding architects in his model Architects (my name). Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Rafael Moneo, Antoni Gaudi and Renzo Piano are mentioned by name and others are included in the forms. See if you can pick out who is being honored where! 3DVIA Shape was used to create this wonderful work of comparative art/architecture. [perecat1 lives in Spain]
You just can’t look at Taxi (my name) by Taner (TASARIMCI) without smiling and wanting to take a fun ride wherever it takes you! Really great forms and details make it a loveable friend! Yaner used CATIA V5 and lots of grins! [Taner lives in Turkey]
Be sure to read the description for the Xenos Ships, 3km Explorer Ship & 100m Corvette (for Support & Defense) model by Richard (kiml) or you’ll miss the amazing detail and thought put into this pair of models in one scene. Great work Richard! Blender is the modeling tool used. [Richard lives in the UK]
tnarhino used 3DVIA Shape to model Saurus. It is a fantastic combination of using all of the available tools and great imagination to create a complex form in such a fun way.
No fun here – Turret by Emanuel (romoemi) is all business! Using 3ds Max, Emanuel has created a truly fearsome weapon. [Emanuel lives in the US]

If you’re old enough, you suffered for real when a Gremlin 1971 trundled by. Now it has been long enough that we can laugh and wonder what they were thinking (“How do we save out company by making a new car out of an existing car?”) 671,475 people liked them enough to buy one, so the last laugh may be on us! Michael (toymaker) did a great job capturing the Gremlin’s “unique” shape using Google SketchUp. [Michael lives in the US]

Rodd (rhalstead) has created another amazing model – Twisted Pyramid With 5 Sides using his own incredible imagination, curiosity and mathematical genius along with Structure Synth. [Rodd lives in the US]
Léon Spilliaert was created by Lingling as one form of art was inspired by a self-portrait in another media. Using Blender, Lingling has beautifully captured the pose, lighting and overall feeling of the original. Be sure to follow the link to see how good this model is! [Lingling lives in Belgium]
St. Johann With a Flight of Crows by Enrico (Arrigo_Silva is another model where you simply must visit the inspiration in order to fully understand the beauty of the model and the history behind it. Google SketchUp is Enrico’s modeling tool. [Enrico lives in Italy]
Just so everyone knows, the order that the Top 10 (and Top 20) are displayed is based on color, type of model and how I’m feeling, not any particular ranking. I just rearrange them until I like the way it looks. It’s as simple as that!
Here’s a brief recap of what I look for when I select the Top 10 (and Top 20):
Variety – One of the most important factors. I try to show models created using lots of different software products and showing lots of different ways of using 3D. I include brief comments on why I chose each model.
Creativity, unusual subject matter and humor – These are big factors. We should all be having fun and feel free to model our passions!
Models must be uploaded by the original modeler – Many times I find models that I think will add to the community and will upload them with credit given to the modeler. These and other models that I can’t be reasonably sure who modeled them (for example – commercial models) are a welcome addition to the 3DVIA community, but the goal of the “Top 10″ is to encourage individual modelers and reward their special creativity.
Models entered in the 3DVIA Challenge contests will not be considered – They’re already getting plenty of attention and I want to spotlight models we may have missed.
There is no reward given – Other than the satisfaction of being noticed, spotlighted and being brought to the attention of more modelers. In my personal experience, the pleasure of having my work appreciated is the ultimate reward anyway.
From time to time I will make mistakes and not follow my own rules. I will review these mistakes on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I will change the post and sometimes I won’t. I will be consistently inconsistent. I am human.
Your comments are always welcomed and encouraged! Your responses will help the modelers and the 3DVIA community as a whole. Feel free to bring other models to my attention and let me know why they attracted you. (PLEASE NOTE: In order to make it easier to explore, all photos are linked directly to the model’s page.)
One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.

Great Models! Great Variety.
And Don, 20 great models are better than 10! ;^) Great list.
Thanks Cliff. It was hard to get it down to 20!
Wow. Many nice models! I like that nissan, even thought I don’t like it in the real world. It’s beautyful detailed, and i think he made the shape more sporty and much nicer.
Glad you like it Oscar.
The 350Z is particularly nice and well-detailed. Marco will be pleased that you like his better than the real one! :)
A very impressive set of models this time. I am truly honored to be considered amongst them.
You deserve it Richard! The detail and thought behind your model go way beyond normal! :)
Gracias. Mi mas sincera gratitud por incluir mi versión, que todo hay que decirlo esta inacabado. Problemas “técnicos” creo!?. Me han impedido en reiteradas ocasiones, incluir mas elementos como mis queridos arboles. No obstante seguire intentándolo. Lo peor es que me vuelto a ocurrir con un modelo similar (mucho mas grande) en el que habia invertido mucho, mucho tiempo (Aprox un mes) sino, más … Es frustrante … Le tengo en el panel de seleccion …. Y no puedo abrirle. Frustrante. Thank you. My most sincere thanks for including my model, it must be said that this unfinished. “Technical” problem indeed!?. I have been prevented on several occasions, include more items such as my beloved trees. But keep trying. What is worse to me again occurred with a similar pattern (much larger) that had spent a long, long time (approx a month) but more … It’s frustrating … We have in the selection panel …. I can not open. Frustrating. Speaking on the issue before us to say: A great demonstration of skill from all models, which combined with her creativity make fence styles and hand techniques with great skill. To mention,,, Rood, tnarhino, Richard, “Taner”, Tom, (archeology, Peru)?. Oscar WoW, the sympathetic Bulby and their studies, the romantic Abu with their flowers, Marco, The Wizard of Smike Also do and everyone else, of course. My congratulations and greetings. From Madrid. (Spain) PereCat.
Even with your model unfinished, you still earned a spot! Your efforts to bring more architects and architecture to our attention is very much appreciated!
Have you upgraded to 3DVIA Shape 3.2? Usually you are required to do that when opening Shape now. Would you send me a message ( http://www.3dvia.com/users/dswavely ) so that I can give you my email address for you to send me your file? The developers may find something to help your situation. :)
Thank you ! “One step closer in my elaborate master plan to conquer the world”
whoops disregard every thing after thank you!
LOL!!!
whatever your ‘wicked plans’ are… consider me in :) :)
Me too! Although I think we would have more fun than “conquering” with our rowdy bunch. If your plans include getting there in the Gremlin we should probably get started right away! :)
My mom had a Corvair with duel carbs that would not sync properly you never knew what it would do from wild acceleration to a lunging “Walk” that felt like repeated whiplash.
The Corvair would certainly qualify as a worthy vehicle for conquerors in need of neck braces! :)
Thanks Don for posting T-20.. I was waiting to see this for last 1000 years (oops!! Just kidding)
Seems my Bulby gets included in T-20. Great :D
Though I was hoping for my let the music play(beach version) / Paradise resort to be included in this. Those two were my personal favorites :(
In any case some great models in one post. Congrats everyone. What do you wish more? :D I am looking forward for the Best of the Best post of 2009 :)
You’re welcome Parth. It was a long wait – things do take time.
Since I was not able to include so many really good models, I’m sure that you have plenty of company in being disappointed with my choices. As I note in my blog comments each time – “One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.”
I feel the splats. :)
Rules says: “Models entered in the 3DVIA Challenge contests will not be considered”
Don, Xenos Ships; 3km Explorer Ship by kiml should not be included in Top-20 post. This model participated in 3dviachallenge16. If you open the model you can see the tag is still there. As per the rule it can’t be highlighted in T-20 post.
No doubt this is an amazing model & I respect that but I am Sorry rule is same for everyone. I request to remove this model from this post.
Partha!!!
I know “Rules are RULEs”… but sometimes to skip a rule, or two, should not upset anyone… especially if it’s been done to appreciate a good, worthy effort…
No doubt, the inclusion of the spaceship doesn’t make any sense since it was already joint winner, along with yours’ and Marian’s ships… but if Don includes it in this Top-20 posts, he surely must have his reasons… if not, must have just missed it… in any case there isn’t any reason for you to get so upset….
Personally, “rules” or “no rules”, I think this should not trigger changes in present post… This is a fine compilation of Top models and should remain as it is…
Warmest Regards,
Abu
Parth,
OK, I made a mistake. You are right and the Richard’s model should not have been considered.
Now, let’s consider the spirit with which I started this post well over a year ago. It is my personal weekly (usually) attempt to honor and spotlight outstanding models and modelers in an informal way. It is all about helping 3DVIA users enjoying their modeling and knowing that they are noticed and appreciated. It is a positive post.
I made up the rules. There is no legal system involved. I make mistakes and take my tomatoes in the face.
And then I move on to the next week.
Demands (requests) for me to make changes will not always be graciously received, nor acted upon out of “obligation”. This is supposed to be fun, not bound up in rules.
So, in response, I have added a new rule (made up by me) – From time to time I will make mistakes and not follow my own rules. I will review these mistakes on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I will change the post and sometimes I won’t. I will be consistently inconsistent. I am human.
Thank you Abu for your warm and caring response. I really appreciate it! Don
Don,
I respect your effort regarding Top-10 posts & I also understand it’s not such an easy task to do week after week. So I am still there with you to support your decision :)
We all are human & mistakes are unavoidable. Don’t worry. You still didn’t loose your fans
Parth
Abu,
I was not in a fight with any of you, neither did I mentioned anything wrong about choice of model. I have seen this model a number of times….As far as I know Top-10 posts are created to highlight models that may have not received recognition. The current model doesn’t belong to such category. It was huge popular & got it’s share of cake.
My point was very simple. We have this model in place of a deserving model that should have highlighted here. So we have disappointed a deserving modeler here.
I believe this is fair reason for me to be upset on behalf of my fellow modelers who didn’t get any recognition today (which I don’t think you felt). My comment isn’t restricted to myself any more..my comment is on behalf of others.
Parth,
Thank you for further clarification of your position and for generously allowing me to keep my fans.
Perhaps it is time to move on.
Don
Its a pleasure to be choosen along with these models ….The models are fantastic …..and mind boggling ……..
You deserve it!
Out toaster is so awful that we call it the “slowster”. I think your toaster would be much faster!!
Tune in tomorrow for another episode of As THE Model Turns.
Play nice boys, only 10 laws/rules are carved in stone, on most others have wiggle room.
:)
