3DVIA Top 10 models – 052 – One Full Year of Celebrating Your Models!

The best models uploaded to 3DVIA.com during the week of Saturday, October 24th through Friday, October 30th are highlighted here. Yikes! 52 Top 10’s filled with your models! 520 models ranked as the best of the week and another 250 included as Honorable Mentions (- 001 and -002 didn’t have Honorable Mentions). That’s dang close to 800 models that have received special recognition!
Thanks to all of you for checking the Top 10 each week and for making it a worthy goal to be included. Everyone has been incredibly gracious as I bumble along trying to pick the most-deserving models.
Thank you also for being so positive, helpful and for making 3DVIA a real community of folks helping each other have fun and learn more about 3D modeling!
Next week I’ll write a celebratory post with some facts and figures (and, of course, some visual examples) of how the year stacked up. Feel free to send me any comments that you’d like to have included in the post by Tuesday, November 17 and I’ll do my best to squeeze them in.
In case your attention span is extremely limited, you can watch the following video in 33 seconds and see all of the included models before you forget what you were trying to remember to do. :)
Easy links to the previous Top 10 lists:

The Top 10:
The model concept and the details that make it work are excellent. I especially like the fire and smoke signals in Hmm!!, conceived and modeled by Jesse using CATIA V5. I sure hope the answer helps the frown become a smile! [Jesse/mastic is from Spain]
B.C. Rich Tracii Guns (Gunslinger) Model was modeled by Shannon using Google SketchUp and his usual meticulous attention to details. You can find other Gunslinger models at the B.C. Rich Guitars web site. [Shannon/sandman14 is from the US]
You better wear these in the right place! Rampone Salewa Cinghiato (crampons) are beautifully modeled by Gregorio using SolidWorks 2009. Just make sure you take them off before you go bowling or golfing!
If we have the right mind-set, we can all learn from the story told in the Destroying and Rebuilding model created by Abu using 3DVIA Shape. It is another example of his great ability to bring a meaningful story to life using 3D. [Abu/abu_roadking is from India]
Oscar created this incredible model of the Koenigsegg CCX several months ago using Blender, but it was too big to upload to 3DVIA. Juan and I volunteered to see if we could get it down to size using our variety of apps and supposed experience. Oscar was EXTREMELY patient and we finally got it back to him over 3 months later! Of course, Juan and I did have a few other things to do, like all of us.
You have to go explore this model in detail. I consider it one of the best on the site – right up there with Benoit Caselli’s great concept car. To be fair to Benoit, he also had to work hard to remove the right details in order to get his file down to size. Don’t take my word for it. Visit both and be amazed! [Oscar/mynameisoscarjo is from Sweden]
P I X A R by Parth is a humorous model that is deceivingly complex. Using 3DVIA Shape, Parth has created accurate serif lettering and most of the mechanical bits and bits that make up a LUXO lamp. Parth explains in the model description his love of animation and the obvious connection to P I X A R Animation Studios. [Parth/XQH_XXX is from India]
This is a beautifully done model of an underwater exploratory vehicle. Seabotix LBV150 by Gregorio appears to have an open bay just waiting for different payloads to perform a variety of tasks. It was created using SolidWorks 2009.
T Van by Calin is a true concept for the future. Its form and volumes make us stop and think about what a car could look like and how we might use them differently. Calin uploaded his vision using the 3DS format. [Calin/l5o2k1s is from Romania]
Go! Go! Go! by Jesse is a great story. His spunky monkeys have stolen the Dassault Systemes logo and are off to have some mischievous fun! Jesse used CATIA V5. [Jesse/mastic is still from Spain]
As the S&B Filters web page says: 2009 Scoop REV 4 by DC82 is all about “AIR IN. POWER OUT.” DS82 created this complexly surfaced model using SolidWorks 2009. (I used the brand new 3DVIA for Adobe Photoshop plugin to easily create the inset section view, while still in Photoshop, to help explain the innards.
This well-detailed kitchen is called Cuisine and was designed by totor009 using SolidWorks 2009.
trigram_VMP put transparency and great textures to work to create Abstract Planet using 3DVIA Shape. There are at least six planets within the parent planet. [trigram_VMP is from India]
Meca Spyder was created by Gruguir using Lightwave3D. I really like the combination of the organic and metallic looks! Is it alive or is it a machine?
Nikolal put his imagination to work and designed the Cyberplane for the future. He uploaded it using the 3DS format. [Nikolal/zenox is from Serbia & Montenegro]
Grr… introduces us to two menacing characters created by Jesse using CATIA V5. Here’s hoping that they’re our friends too! [As far as I know Jesse/mastic hasn't gone anywhere, so you'll still find him in Spain]
Just so everyone knows, the order that the Top 10 and Honorable Mentions are displayed is based on color, type of model and how I’m feeling, not any particular ranking. I just rearrange them until I like the way it looks. It’s as simple as that!
Here’s a brief recap of what I look for when I select the “Top 10″ and “Honorable Mentions”:
Variety – One of the most important factors. I try to show models created using lots of different software products and showing lots of different ways of using 3D. I include brief comments on why I chose each model.
Creativity, unusual subject matter and humor – These are big factors. We should all be having fun and feel free to model our passions!
Models must be uploaded by the original modeler – Many times I find models that I think will add to the community and will upload them with credit given to the modeler. These and other models that I can’t be reasonably sure who modeled them (for example – some commercial models) are a welcome addition to the 3DVIA community, but the goal of the “Top 10″ is to encourage individual modelers and reward their special creativity.
Models entered in the 3DVIA Challenge contests will not be considered – They’re already getting plenty of attention and I want to spotlight models we may have missed.
There is no reward given – Other than the satisfaction of being noticed, spotlighted and being brought to the attention of more modelers. In my personal experience, the pleasure of having my work appreciated is the ultimate reward anyway.
Your comments are always welcomed and encouraged! Your responses will help the modelers and the 3DVIA community as a whole. Feel free to bring other models to my attention and let me know why they attracted you. (PLEASE NOTE: In order to make it easier to explore, all photos are linked directly to the model’s page.)
One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.

Gongrats!! One year since the first Top Ten, a great idea. This made my day :)
I wont be humble, I deserved to be in the Top Ten :P
Thanks! Yes you did deserve to be in the Top 10! :D
I continue here, with a big smile :) Monkeys invasion! I did not expect. Now, I’m looking for a cave where to hide me.Thank you Don, for including three models… I have to prepare my baggage… :D
You’re welcome Jesse. It’s great to have you and your models back again. I hope the monkeys never find you – except maybe to inspire more wonderful models. :)
It’s a great honor for owners of these models to be included in the 52nd top 10 models =) and it’s great to have such a great models included in the 52nd top 10 models =D
Now I’m confused, but you’re right – the two go together hand in hand. :D
PHEW… At last a Top10 after long long time :) I guess last one was 46th
But I’m doubly glad that I made it to this special 52th Top10. First Anniversary Special :) Happy Anniversary Top 10 and Don!!! And wishing you, both, all the very best things moving ahead ;-)
Don is always gracious enough to tell the fellow modelers at 3DVIA that they did all the hard work and he just complied them to make the Top10. Now is our time to appreciate all the hard work and efforts Don has put to make 52 Top Top10s (this is not a typo-error)
Great Job Don… You’ve been doing hard work all this time… We’ve been included in some Top10s, we missed some… But you were there every single time… not a single miss… Bravo…
Thank you Abu. I very much appreciate your comments! It has been a lot of work, one week at a time, just like we all do for our families, our employers and for our communities.
It makes me very proud to see the effort and the quality of work that goes into the models here on 3DVIA. It gives me a lot of pleasure to highlight the 15 models each week that go into the Top 10, since I’m a modeler too and know how good it feels to have my work appreciated.
It also makes me very proud to see how the 3DVIA community of modelers has grown and gotten better and better over the last year. It makes me happy to see how supportive folks are and how much they help their fellow modelers.
Thank all of you too!
Todos, todos, todos son
All, all, all are,,, impressive. The level of calls is reaching the top. A truly amazing quality. Congratulations to those selected a great job. The presentation to say a 10.
You are right perecat1. The models keep getting better and better! Thanks for your 10 on the presentation too! :)
It’s a great pleasure to be included in the Week-52 Top-10 models. I think among all my models which was selected for Top-10 post this one gave the most satisfaction :)
What a great year long post with some amazing models. Don I would like to thank you for your hard work on selecting models & keeping up the pace with all of us. I also believe it’s because of your weekly post that makes most of us work hard to get selected in this blog :)
I am sure the special post on a year long models would also be great. I would like to see some great modelers & some good comment makers included in the post. Also your (Don) experience with models, differences that you have seen (then & now)…….
One small request It would be nice if you can give a frame to my models like the other models……
Thanks once again & will look forward for your special post………
Thank you Parth and congrats again on your own great contributions over the last year!
I’m glad that the weekly Top 10 does provide some inspiration as well as recognition. I do realize that each of you have many choices about what to do with your time away from all of your other daily activities. Learning and growing are life-long activities and I think those who are drawn to 3D modeling need both the inspiration and recognition to keep their modeling passion alive.
Seeing other people’s work and being able to get some friendly help and offer that same help to others is also important. The 3DVIA community is growing and getting better as more and more people bring their passion, models and experience here to share. I am truly grateful for that.
The 1st Anniversary Top 10 post should be interesting to write, so thanks for your suggestions about what to include. All suggestions are welcome!
I use our new 3DVIA for Adobe Photoshop plugin ( http://www.3dvia.com/software/3dvia-labs/photoshop-3d-plugin/ ) and some times it just doesn’t work, especially on really large models. That’s why it is still in the Software Labs area. So for those models I go back to the screen grab method. That’s what happened with your P I X A R model.
Thanks, as always, for all of your contributions Parth!
I weren’t here when the fist Top Ten came, in fact I just discovered blender about a year ago, but I want to thank you for the work, both with the Koenigsegg, but also the hard work making the Top Ten every week for a year, and always commenting nice on every single model!
I’m looking forward to the new year of Top Ten!
Thank you Oscar! Juan and I learned a lot working on your Koenigsegg and that is a good thing. Modelers like you make the whole effort worthwhile! :)
I have noticed something special on this post & that is you (Don) have added everyone’s real name as well as the 3dvia name which seems a very human touch to the post. Ofcourse it’s better to know the name of the modeler…. Good addition :)
I’m glad you noticed Parth. I’ve always been a little unsure about whether users want anonymity or would prefer that we use their real names. As modelers have started commenting to each other with their real names, then I have used both in the Top 10 too.
In the past both Shannon and Jesse have made comments that indicated that they really liked be addressed with their real names, so I decided to try it for everyone in the Top 10 when I can be fairly sure that I’m using the right name. :)
Everyone’s comments on this subject are welcome! Thanks for noticing it Parth!
Congratulations to every modeler. The 52th week is something special and all of the models in that week reflect that.
Special thanks to Don for one year of excellent preperation and commenting each week..
I am curious to see where the next 52 weeks will take us.
Thanks Alfred. I do appreciate your comments! Your standards are high. :)
If the last 52 weeks are a guide then the next 52 should be even more exciting as everyone gets better and better. I’m looking forward to that!
Ok, this was mentioned before, but on average 8 new artists are introduced in every top ten (at last count, which was a while ago)!
Do you consider that good tomy? I do. :)
Congratulations on the first year of 3dvia top ten!
Everyone deserves it! Party hats all around!
Happy Birthday to the 3DVIA Top 10!
Why thank you Mr. Dave!
Wow! Some really outstanding models in this one…high quality. I like seeing both picturesque models and great designs in the top 10.
Don puts a LOT of work into the top 10, and is very dedicated to this project and our users…congrats to Don and all our users for making this a great weekly article!!!
Thanks Cliff. I especially appreciate your comments, since you see it from “the inside”. :)
