topten_blog_047

The best models uploaded to 3DVIA.com during the week of Saturday, September 19th through Friday, September 25th are highlighted here. You can go on a cruise, wear your new shoes, go dancing, buy a new car, meet new people, read stories and even take a taxi ride, so check out this weeks Top 10 in a brand new style! Comments are welcome on the new layout, both good and bad. Thanks to Juan Del Rio for his design and technical help and to Dan Ubilla for his “deep” technical help. But, as always, send the tomatoes my way if you don’t like it!

In case your attention span is extremely limited, you can watch the following video in 34 seconds and see all the included models before you forget what you were doing. :)

Just so everyone knows, the order that the Top 10 and Honorable Mentions are displayed is based on color, type of model and how I’m feeling, not any particular ranking. I just rearrange them until I like the way it looks. It’s as simple as that!

Here’s a brief recap of what I look for when I select the “Top 10″ and “Honorable Mentions”:

Variety – One of the most important factors. I try to show models created using lots of different software products and showing lots of different ways of using 3D. I include brief comments on why I chose each model.

Creativity, unusual subject matter and humor – These are big factors. We should all be having fun and feel free to model our passions!

Models must be uploaded by the original modeler – Many times I find models that I think will add to the community and will upload them with credit given to the modeler. These and other models that I can’t be reasonably sure who modeled them (for example – commercial models) are a welcome addition to the 3DVIA community, but the goal of the “Top 10″ is to encourage individual modelers and reward their special creativity.

Models entered in the 3DVIA Challenge contests will not be considered – They’re already getting plenty of attention and I want to spotlight models we may have missed.

There is no reward given – Other than the satisfaction of being noticed, spotlighted and being brought to the attention of more modelers. In my personal experience, the pleasure of having my work appreciated is the ultimate reward anyway.

Your comments are always welcomed and encouraged! Your responses will help the modelers and the 3DVIA community as a whole. Feel free to bring other models to my attention and let me know why they attracted you. (PLEASE NOTE: In order to make it easier to explore, all photos are linked directly to the model’s page.)

One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.

  1. Great update of the 3DVIA Top ten post :D
It’s much clearer now :) and like always, all models are great
but lol, I see that you’re still thinking about the hair Don :p

  2. Thanks Don for including my models :)

I am sorry that I didnt find time to check others model so I can’t make a reply what I liked exactly :(

Looking at the layout I think there were more images from different views & different angles making it look great. This is missing. I personally would like to see a model in different angles :) I think I am too demanding :(
Model name / modeler name / software used – details are mentioned in 3 different lines. I think it would be better if we see all these info in a single line. It will definitely reduce scrolling more up-down.

Positive: The images captured looks much better than previous. Which format you used here? Looks shiny & quality is also great :)

Overall I appreciate new format. May be others will give their feedback too.

    • You’re welcome Parth.

Thanks for the specific comments about the new layout. I’ll definitely take your thoughts into consideration.

The images were captured in a way I can’t mention quite yet, but the captures are higher definition, which makes the Photoshop work much sharper. I like that part of it too. How do you feel about the background of the models?

Have a great Diwali holiday and don’t make too much noise or burn anything down. :)

      • oh come on!
he worked much on that, even if the keeps secret that(i supose is a neew thing as the .dae new file extent oe shape 3.0 and other stuff)
be pacient and you guys will have time for that
as the images, i like the new background but only one picture, hoooonestrly, for qich i am very well known, sucks.
and yes is quite dully to see the notes and other stuff
where is your humor don? i talk about your suh-ueet jokes and funny references(don’t take as example my morbid jokes)
the format used , country and modeler are better to view just i don’tunderstand pat’s point-more to scroll…pffft you have that wheel for something. you are afraid it will break? use the pg dn/up or the arrows…whatever
guys, i am overall thanksed by the new layout, just, like any pioneer technology, idea or anything else, is not quite perfect at the begining. so be nicer(what words from me :O )
that’s all i had to say

ps:my friend tom asked me to ask you don to include, if you like, the models ‘air drone’ and ‘turret station’
only if you really like them ,but he wants that trough my account
at the modelser you can just say

        • Thomas Schossleitner
that’s his name, i’m now sure

          • Honesty is appreciated! Thank you sady! Your comments are helpful as I work on “evolving” the design. My humor is still here and I’m really glad that it is appreciated (most of the time anyway).

Regarding the Top 10 selection process, I just go through them and try not to notice who made them and what software was used. It always comes down to what was uploaded that week and (of course) how I’m feeling at the time.

The secret to being included is to keep uploading good models – that’s about it.

  3. I think it sounds a bit more dull than before.

    Now:

    Model title: Britannia Bridge
    Modeler: squarefountain
    Software/format used: Google SketchUp
    Country: -
Notes: Great structural modeling and use of textures.

    Before:

Power Wagon by toymaker makes me happy just looking at it. From the flame job to the nicely detailed drive train, it just begs to be taken for a ride! toymaker used Google SketchUp to create this classic. [toymaker is from the US]

I agree with XQH_XXX that there are not many different views, it was before. I also agree with Parth that its much better picture quality.

    • Thanks Oscar for adding to your likes and dislikes. I appreciate that you value to human touch that I put into the model information. I’m never sure whether anyone actually reads any of it.

The same is true of the number of views. I’ve never been sure that the multiple views were appreciated.

      Thanks for the feedback!

  4. I am not sure about others but as I have already written I would like to see a good model from different angles. It looks much beautiful that way.

Oscar has mentioned a good point the note looks pretty different. Previously it was much enjoyable to read the comments or the humor that is added with it. Now it looks more straight forward, not too much of my liking :(

Don no matter what you think don’t forget people read your comment & watch your post / comments up closely. So never feel that no one notices.

The background looks great. First I thought the model is coming out from a frame :)
Why is the difference in framing in top-10 & HM posts. T-10 has new looks but HM looks like the old version :(

I am going out for my vacation till Oct25th. I will catch you all & new look of weekly T-10 post once I return. Till then wish you all Happy & safe Diwali (Diwali is on this coming saturday)

    • Thank you Parth for your additional comments that help clarify things for me. Since I’m working on T-10-048 (I like your abbreviation, although I haven’t figured out what HM is), I’ll be able to immediately make some fixes and you can all comment again. :)

  5. I like this new layout. Don’t just look at all the pictures! That’s what the view 3d button is for. It does sound a bit more… dull, but in the notes let’s be glad he’s still got that great humor. And besides, it’s almost been a year! 52 weeks of top ten and it’s a whole year he’s been making top ten! About time for a new style?

    • Thanks tomy for your comments too. “Dull”, boring, too clinical – I’ll be going back to the other way of providing the model information without a doubt.

Thanks also for noting that it has been 47 weeks of almost exactly the same layout. It is time for a freshening (that works).

  6. Tomy, everybody can’t play 3D, you cant with a mac.

  7. Demasiado blanco, mucha rueda. Le falta un marco y mucho color, asi soy yo…. Rainbow man. (Irisman). Mucho nivel. Te doy 8´5. Too much white, a lot of wheel. It lacks a framework and lots of color, asi soy yo …. Rainbow man. (Irisman). I think something else would be well content. More work for you …. Not everything is bad, the overall look is very fresh and clean, easy access to all information. The models are great, many and varied techniques and styles. The shoes feel like wearing them and get some exercise. Many levels. I give 8′5.

    • Thanks for your thoughts perecat1! I agree that there is too much white space. I am fighting with Wordpress html to figure out how to get what I want rather than what they decide to give me. I hope the next Top 10 will be closer to being better.
