3DVIA Top 10 3D models - 140 on 3DVIA.com

Time to party! This Top 10, #140, marks four years of gathering the best models uploaded to 3DVIA. That means over 1,400 models and close to 700 individuals have been recognized and spotlighted as the best. Congratulations to all of you for contributing such great models. I hope that we all can continue to share our passion for 3D modeling.

The ten best 3D models, one 3DVIA Experience and one 3DVIA Scene uploaded to 3DVIA.com during the weeks of Saturday, October 13th, 2012 through Friday, November 17th, 2012 are highlighted here.

(Easy links to all 139 previous Top 10 posts are right after the current week’s models, Experience and Scene.)

Track Bike Aranea by Henri (Henrixx) is without doubt the most beautiful concept bike I’ve ever seen! It would take loads of stress analysis (or painful trial and error) and masterly welding skills to make it real, but I sure wish I had the money to fund its development. Henri uploaded this gorgeous creation in 3DS format. [Henrixx lives in Finland]

Underpan by catia_v4 was modeled using CATIA V5, but I’ll bet that making a real one using LEGOs would be way more fun. I’d love to be able to play with it. All the mechanisms would keep me fascinated for hours!

Using 3DVIA Scenes, mkanoza has created Turnstone 2011 Neocon Showroom, a virtual store that you can visit from the comfort of your office or the sofa at home. Take a walk around and see what you like and get some ideas on how to create a setting of your own.

That’s one BIG hook on the Bull Head Plane by AXYON. This must be quite impressive when it’s in action. It looks like there would be plenty of motion and flashing reflections to attract attention and hopefully a big gulp! It was uploaded in VRML format.  [AXYON lives in France]

Leonardo Da Vinci’s genius is amply displayed in this model of his Multicannon design by c_ridley. It would certainly get very busy after every fusillade as the whole assembly was rotated and all 11 barrels were reloaded!  SolidWorks was used as the modeling tool.

Aracade + Gouttière + Clips J0 2012 by lagencecocoa is an impressive array of dental hardware. I’m not sure what the exact purpose is, but the modeling, using SolidWorks, is excellent. [lagencecocoa lives in France]

Marcos (DrSlumper) has treated us to another of his hand-drawn and then SolidWorks-modeled Yamaha TRX 850 parts. The castings of his Yamaha R1 (rn04) Lower Yoke must be gorgeous to behold. Check out the latest on his project at http://thetrxproject.blogspot.com.es/. [Marcos lives in Spain]

Elegance and consummate pleasure come to mind when I see Ntre Complete With Ottman Assy Table Movement by Spencer (spencergreening). Explore the sensuous forms and intricate details for a real treat. Spencer uploaded it in 3DS format.  [Spencer lives in the UK]

You have to go view Verdens Ende 1 by Spirarkitekter for yourself to appreciate what has been done with a flat image and fantastically detailed topography steps. It appears close to real and does a great job conveying a sense of place. The 3DS format was used for uploading. [Spirarkitekter lives in Norway]

Abakus 9mm Lens-Head Amp Assy by taurus35 is a thoroughly detailed model that helps visualize the assembly and will help avoid many production problems too. SolidWorks is being used at its best.  [taurus35 lives in the UK]

Da Vinci’s Odometer is an excellent example of how compelling a 3DVIA Experience can be. It was made with a 3D model made by Brian Law and created using 3DVIA Studio by Gallerie.

Just so everyone knows, the order that the Top 10 are displayed is based on color, type of model and how I’m feeling, not any particular ranking. I just rearrange them until I like the way it looks. It’s as simple as that!

Here’s a brief recap of what I look for when I select the Top 10:

Variety – One of the most important factors. I try to show models created using lots of different software products and showing lots of different ways of using 3D. I include brief comments on why I chose each model.

Creativity, unusual subject matter and humor – These are big factors. We should all be having fun and feel free to model our passions!

There is no reward given – Other than the satisfaction of being noticed, spotlighted and being brought to the attention of more modelers. In my personal experience, the pleasure of having my work appreciated is the ultimate reward anyway.

From time to time I will make mistakes and not follow my own rules – I will review these mistakes on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I will change the post and sometimes I won’t. I will be consistently inconsistent. I am human.

Your comments are always welcomed and encouraged! Your responses will help the modelers and the 3DVIA community as a whole. Feel free to bring other models to my attention and let me know why they attracted you.

(PLEASE NOTE: In order to make it easier to explore, all photos are linked directly to the model’s page.)

One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.

  1. These are nice too! Great to hear there has been four years of Top Ten, and that even though the progress has slowed down it just keeps on coming back. Thanks for the Top Ten dswavely, us 3dvia-ers (and Teapotters ;) ) appreciate it.

    • Thanks! It’s good to know that you still check it out. I feel that it is very important that we recognize the great models that are being done by the community. I would like to still do it on a weekly basis to spotlight more modelers and their work, but other responsibilities keep me too busy.

I always look forward to doing the Top 10 (except having to narrow it down to only ten models) because it is a chance for me to actually concentrate on the models and recognize individual modelers. I’m glad that you “old-timers” can appreciate the longevity of the series and still enjoy it. :)

  2. Excellent collection of models. It really has to be very hard to pick just 10. Congratulations to all those selected. Good job.

    • I’m glad that you liked it Enrrique. You are correct that it is extremely difficult to make the choices. I always do a first cut of all the models that qualify – this time there were 39 models in that first list. The process from there is where it gets really hard. I’m losing hair fast! :)

  3. LOL. 39. It’s not easy, no. Much head scratching. Fortunately there are also a lot of fun. Congratulations on the 4th anniversary.

    • Thanks Enrrique! 140 times of scratching my head – no wonder my hair is falling out! I still have a bunch left so I should be good for a few more Top 10s. :)

  4. Awsome models :)

Since I am in LEGO mode these days, I like the “LEGO Underpan” the most. Great job

    best regards
    Alfred

    • Thanks Alfred!

I like the LEGO Underpan model a lot too. It was hard to show it off well with all the shiny black parts and so much going on mechanically. A lot like trying to show your models! :D

  5. Excuse the delay I don´t know why, but I do not realized about this top ten. A lot of thanks again, little bit later but always thankful. It´s a great honor for me being between all of these great modellers. Keep the good job with 3dvia!!. http://thetrxproject.blogspot.com.es/2013/03/late-thanks-to-3dvia.html

  6. yes a great list of models once again

a shame 140 top 10 pages and also the end of a epoke since there will be no more top 10 lists on 3dvia
since they have removed our beloved DSWAVELY from the comunnity and put him to do some thing else than support the user group

    • Thanks smike. The Top 10 posts have been a great way to highlight the great models and modelers that we have here on 3DVIA.com. It has been an honor for me to spend so much time over four years working with each of you.

As you said, I have been given different assignments that take me away from the community, except for times when I just have to visit and see what’s been going on. :)
