Whether you want to go elegant and inspiring, get down to earth, head up to the skies or even further into space we have the models to get you there!

(Easy links to all 109 previous Top 10 posts are right after the current week’s models and Experience.)

The Top 10:

I can barely start to show the whole story that Michael (smike) tells in his presentation of Excalibur Fighter Launch Tube – Fighters Launching. All of these shots and many more are there, plus great explanations of his modeling techniques. The textures alone will leave you breathless! Michael uses Google SketchUp like a virtuoso! [Michael lives in Denmark]

Haunted Mansion Organ by DJCarson is ready to deliver the chest-thumping deep notes and uplifting higher notes that make an organ a powerful instrument. Great detail and textures. It was uploaded in 3DS format.

I love the great surfacing and subtle details that gammamold modeled into AL209217. It could be a sculpture! It was uploaded in IGES format.

This Student’s Project presentation is an excellent example of how well webmasternavales understands the power of 3D and the use of 3DVIA to develop whole new education methods at ETSI Navales. He and the students created this amazing slide show using 3DVIA Studio. [ETSI Navales is in Spain]

With Megapolis, Enrrique (perecat1) really stretched his imagination, patience and the new larger acceptable file size to model this incredibly detailed and textured group of buildings! 3DVIA Shape has rarely been used to such magnificent effect. [Enrrique lives in Spain]

MRO by bkumanchik looks like a fully capable satellite for gathering lots of data. The textures are a very good representation of the difficult materials used on space vehicles. Blender got a real work out on this one.

If you want a gracious and elegant apartment, then Q by Jack (jacknanjue) is just the place! The textures are just phenomenal! Jack uploaded this masterpiece in OBJ format. Do you take sugar with your tea?

Crawler Crane 3 by winston just grabs your eyeballs and makes you like it (OK, mostly if you’re a mechanical nerd) Excellent modeling and even better textures make this a beauty from any angle. Winston used Google SketchUp. [winston is from the United Kingdom]

Even after more than 50 years in service, the B-52H modeled by Alfred (alfredix) is still a beast to be reckoned with! Alfred has modeled this truly iconic aircraft in meticulous detail in Pro/E, then translated everything into STEP format for uploading. To see more images of this stunning model visit Alfred’s Picasa B-52H Album. [Alfred lives in Germany]

What a fantastical and wondrous new place for Dr. Who to save the world from! New Tardis David Tennant 1 1 Modified was modeled using Google SketchUp. The textures aren’t complete yet, but the screen grab shows how great it could look!

Late 631 Replica by Ben (BenBrothers) is a gorgeous aircraft with some very good surface modeling using CATIA V5. The Latécoère 631 wasn’t a huge commercial success, but it sure is great to look at.

Just so everyone knows, the order that the Top 10 are displayed is based on color, type of model and how I’m feeling, not any particular ranking. I just rearrange them until I like the way it looks. It’s as simple as that!

Here’s a brief recap of what I look for when I select the Top 10:

Variety – One of the most important factors. I try to show models created using lots of different software products and showing lots of different ways of using 3D. I include brief comments on why I chose each model.

Creativity, unusual subject matter and humor – These are big factors. We should all be having fun and feel free to model our passions!

Models entered in the 3DVIA Challenge contests will not be considered – They’re already getting plenty of attention and I want to spotlight models we may have missed.

There is no reward given – Other than the satisfaction of being noticed, spotlighted and being brought to the attention of more modelers. In my personal experience, the pleasure of having my work appreciated is the ultimate reward anyway.

From time to time I will make mistakes and not follow my own rules – I will review these mistakes on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I will change the post and sometimes I won’t. I will be consistently inconsistent. I am human.

Your comments are always welcomed and encouraged! Your responses will help the modelers and the 3DVIA community as a whole. Feel free to bring other models to my attention and let me know why they attracted you.

(PLEASE NOTE: In order to make it easier to explore, all photos are linked directly to the model’s page.)

One final note of caution: these are my choices (dswavely) and my choices alone. So, aim the tomatoes appropriately.
