3DVIA Featured Artist – Oscar Johansson (mynameisoscarjo)

Oscar (mynameisoscarjo) has been amazing us with his Blender models for some time now. From his earliest uploads to his most recent masterpieces, he just keeps getting better and better. His high poly cars have details that are spot on and excellent surfacing too. He keeps the humor level high and is a highly valued member of the 3DVIA community!

Oscar’s models have been featured in Top 10 – 018, 025, 043, 052, 053, 054 and 062 as well as being Honorable Mentions in 026, 030 and 036.

Here’s more about Oscar in his own words:

How should I start? I’m a fourteen year old guy, living in Sweden. I have many interests and hobbies. I was born in a little village in Skåne. I’m going to a pretty nice school and one day, my friend Joel showed me Blender!

One of Oscar’s early Blender models – he’s just getting started!

Q1: How did you first become interested in 3D modeling?

Well, I saw it on TV once, how they create a car game. First, they build a model. Then, they put it in some sort of cool environment. I thought it would be awesome to create the kind of cars I love, especially the Koenigsegg! I was only five when I fell in love with that car. I have always liked cars.

Compare Oscar’s earlier version of the Koenigsegg CCX…

…with his latest version.

Q2: What types of 3D modeling do you do?

I’m often creating games with Joel (123julgranskorv) and then it’s just about anything, car games, tanks, shooters, adventure and more. In games, the environment is very important. Lots of details, yet not too high poly…  When I’m doing models just for fun, I like to do cars. Nice looking cars. But I’m not only modeling cars, lots of other things too. But cars is what I like to model most for the moment. Usually it’s pretty advanced models.

Oscar used this early low poly Saleen S7 in a game that he created.

Q3: What is the primary purpose of your 3D modeling?

Very simple. Having fun and share it with others.

How about some fun having dinner in Oscar’s Restaurant Spaceship?

Q4: Does 3D modeling play a role in the work you do?

I’m not really working, but sometimes I render pictures for my school homework!

Q5: What part of 3D modeling do you find most rewarding?

I like when I find a blueprint of a car and start to create a nice mesh. I like doing complicated shapes and adding details to make it look realistic. I really don’t like when things are getting messy or too complicated in the mesh, like the Koenigsegg. It was a pain to work with at the end.

Oscar’s latest model of the Saleen S7 is high poly and beautifully done!

Q6: What additional software do you use to create your 3D models/images?
I’m using Pixelmator or Photoshop to edit and make textures and NMG to create normal maps, to increase details without making the meshes to heavy. I have tried SketchUp, but I found out I was fine with Blender. :)

Q7: How much 3D modeling time do you have in a week?
It’s a big variation, but I would say, one hour per school day. The weekends I could sit maybe two hours with Blender. I have other interests too you know. ;)

Q8: What are your tips for staying focused on a large project?
My tip is not to stay focused too much. If it gets boring, do something else, listen to music, sleep, and you will be full of inspiration again. Do some small, fun models, until you want to continue with your big project.

Q9: Which of your 3D models is your favorite?

I love all of my high poly cars. It’s like a family! If I must pick one, I would say the Alfa Romeo 8C Competitzione. Beautiful car, and I think it’s nicely modeled too.  I can find so many modeling mistakes in the Koenigsegg, I’ve never really loved the Saleen car, the Ferrari is not that beautiful and the Lamborghini is not good looking nor is it well modeled. I like the Vågbil too!

Oscar’s favorite car model – so far…

Q10: Do you think 3D modeling is different in different parts of the world? How?
Of course it is. We get inspiration from our country and culture. I do think people all over the world can understand each model though. It’s like a big language.

The Vågbil just waiting for it’s chance on the open road.

Q11: Just for fun, what is your favorite game?  movie?  comic book?
My favorite game is definitely Battlefield 1942. It’s so much fun, you have to try it! Favorite movie… well, I love the Monty Python gang, old Donald Duck or Jim Carrey movies… I can’t really decide which one is the best! I never read comic books, but I love Calvin and Hobbes!

Q12: What is your favorite subject other than 3D modeling?
Being out with friends, making music with a funny little application GarageBand, surfing on the internet… well  a lot of stuff!

Thanks Oscar for taking some time from your busy  schedule to share your answers with us. It has been a real pleasure to watch your continuing growth as a modeler and to enjoy your lively spirit within the 3DVIA community. We’re looking forward to your version of the new Koenigsegg Agera!
