Challenge Complete - 3D Air Traffic Control
3DVIA Shape, Models Spotlight January 11th, 2008That was quick. I published a post earlier this week covering the great building models that siege103 had posted on 3DVIA using Google SketchUp. In that post, I challenged Chris from Earthware to create a version of his building using our 3DVIA Shape modeling application and…Voilà!
3D Model of the Duxford Control Tower
Thank you for the quick turn around on the very cool 3D model. I put the same assignment out to anyone else - make a 3D model using 3DVIA Shape and drop a comment here. I’ll post the best versions when you upload them to the site.
While we are on the subject of buildings…you should check out Marc’s new group for House and Building 3D modelers. After you join the group, you can add your 3D models to the group directly from the model page.

I am glad to hear you like the model. It was a challenge to build in 3Dvia’s interface firstly as im fairly new to it but also because there is only a basic tool set avaliable.
Having said this though the overall simplicity of the modeling style is very user friendly
and with a few more additions to the tool set I think Shape could be a very effective modeling package.
I am pleased to see PNG’s are supported which allowed me to make the railings without modeling them physically and the line locking function also came in handy, I have often found a simular fuction in sketchup a bit erratic but shape seems to have it down.
In the next release i would love to see a follow me tool as well as a scale tool.
I think that having these will take modeling in shape to the next level.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Congrats on your Air Traffic Control model! Great job! With regards to your comment on a “scale tool”, have you tried using the Manipulate tool to scale an object? When you box select an entire object with the manipulate tool selected, 3 yellow arrows and 3 yellow arcs appear at the center of the object. You can drag the arrows to move the object in any direction as well as drag the handles on the arcs to scale the object.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Marc
