This is my first test to put some landscape elements to my models.

This diorama shows an engineer company while building a ponton brigde across the river.

two Little birds are securing the scene.

On the hill in the back, an UH-1 is dropping an Army Ranger team to secure the engineers from the oposite side of the river. (A bit late, the bridge is nearly finished)

The bridge elements are moved by boat, that are specifically built for that purpose.

Stats on the model and files:

Size STEP file: 40MB

Size ZIP file: 5MB

Size 3DXML file: 4,75MB

no of unique parts: 398

no of total parts: 2089

This night, I have dreamed of this diorama. I admit it, his models and the models of sady, they transport me to my infancy, when it was playing with my soldiers’ plastic collection. That memories!. But this one, he has made me dream. 5 stars from me.

thank you mastic. sorry that my models make you dream of :) Actually, when I was a small boy, I had a lot those plastic kits and I played with them in the sand box, making those scenes. I must admit, I am adult, but I did not grow up yet :)

@sady: I discovered a new feature, that helps making those shapes and yes, the water is there. it is not covered, it just has the same color as the rest. I need to try something else…

5 Big shiny stars from me! This is a very ambitious model that has worked out very well. Great job combining so many elements into one to tell a story.

I see the water under the main surface. SolidWorks is certainly not the same as Pro/E, but it often has the problem of needing a gap between surfaces or a change in surface elevation between adjoining surface or else the color is lost. Just a random thought.

What alfredix meant is that he has so many soldier and tank models, he thought he was giving you bad dreams, just look at his models!

What does solidworks have to do with step? Yes, I admit, sometimes I dream about 3dvia too.

@Don: Thank you Don. I think it is not SW that is different :) It is the whole STEP thing. STEP is not made to transport DCC data, ike textures and so on. And it definitely has problems with transparent colors (the water is transparent blue)
I need to try a few more things, because I like this “new” comand I discovered and there will be more landscapes coming. You can see in the webalbum how it looks on my screen.
Maybe I just upload the basic shape and let you guys do the “painting”, so everybody can color the landscape as he/she wants.

I dream about 3DVIA all the time, but I doubt that is a surprise :P

@tomy – users of SolidWorks can export their models in many different formats, including STEP. Each company’s exporters seem to behave differently and even the way the model is built can affect how the export process works. Since alfredix uses Pro/E, there are probably more differences than similarities, but sometimes a suggestion will trigger a memory of how/when/why something worked or didn’t work. Long-winded, I know, but formats and translating them is a very tricky business.

@alfredix – Thanks for the further clarification. Is the “new” command in Pro/E or where? Your web albums are great for showing what it should look like. :D

Hi Don.
The “new” comand is in ProE. It is called “warp”. It was sitting there since I use ProE. I just did not have any interest in it, becasue the “warping” is done without any dimensions. You just drag and drop knots of a mesh for example to modify a surface (I think it works pretty similar to the freeform deformation in 3Dvia Shape. Since I am a technical person, where everything has to be dimensioned I did not see a lot of use in it. I must admit, that it was Mastic with his beautiful shaped models made me think… And that waswhen I started to play with that “new” comand :) Thanks you mastic, for being the inspiration for that! I love your shape design, and your Degracows are just blowing me away :)

HI Alfred,
Thanks! Not being a development guy either, I’m always glad to hear about new ways of doing things and how people discover or figure them out. Also being from a long engineering/CAD background makes it harder (but more fun) to let go of specifications and dimensions and just drags things around and see what happens!

I agree that mastic has brought a whole new level of imagination and playfulness with an “engineering” program to my attention too, which I really enjoy!

So, now you’ll be modeling at “Warp” speed more often? (Sorry, I love bad puns.)

Hi Don, I wish I could model with Warp Speed (and I like that StarTrek association a lot, theyshow all the movies and the old TV series now in German TV, yeahhh), becasue I have so many ideas, but unfortunately so less time :(

Hi Alfred,
We have lots of Star Trek fans in the office, so it’s always in the back of my mind :). sady2 is right though, Warp speed modeling might not be so good, taking the time to filter all of our ideas is a good thing :)

@sady2 – do you mean “Pro/E”? That is a shortcut for the real name Pro/ENGINEER. Check out their web site – http://www.ptc.com/products/proengineer/

To Sady2: thank you Sady
To Don and Sady2:
But there is no reason for concern.
I just figured out that the main portion of all my models (all Trucks and Trailers and the logistic equipment is not really made for dioramas). So there is a big project ahead of me: Rework about 250 models to better fit in dioramas, means activating some “action” inside the model, so that it can be shown in different positoins. Like an unloading truck etc. Having this in mind, the WARP modelling must wait a bit. Maybe there is one or the other landscape falling off in the meantime, but the rework of all the trucks has prioritiy now. Without them the whole landscaping is a bit boring (at least to me) Stay tuned :)
