In the mid 1980s in the small Colorado town of Calumet, a normal fall morning is interrupted by the appearance of Cuban and Soviet paratroopers in fields behind the local high school. As the invading force begin their attack, a small band of squirrels group together and flee to the nearby mountains. Led by Jed Eckert, his brother Matt,and their friends Robert, Danny, Daryl and Aardvark, the group call themselves the Wolverines and begin a resistance against the Soviet-allied occupation force.

At the outbreak of World War III, Midwestern high school squirrels turned refugees slowly organized themselves into an effective guerrilla force to turn back the tide of Soviet invaders.
